WhenNelsgraduatedfromgrammarschool,hewantedtogoontohighschool.“Itwillcostalittlemoney,”hesaid.

Eagerlywegatheredaroundthetable.ItookdownaboxandlaiditcarefullyinfrontofMama.Thiswasthe“LittleBank”.Itwasusedforsuddenemergencies,suchasthetimewhenChristinebrokeherarmandhadtobetakentoadoctor.

Nelslistedthecostsofthethingshewouldneed.MamacountedoutthemoneyintheLittleBank.Therewasnotenough.“WedonotwanttogototheBank,”shereminded.Weallshookourheads.

“IwillworkinDillon’sgroceryafterschool,”Nelsvolunteered.

Mamagavehimabrightsmileandwrotedownanumber.“That’snotenough,”Papasaid.Thenhetookhispipeoutofhismouthandlookedatitforalongtime.“Iwillgiveupsmoking,”hesaidsuddenly.

MamareachedacrossthetableandtouchedPapa’sarm.Thenshewrotedownanotherfigure.

“IwilllookaftertheElvingtonchildreneveryFridaynight,”Isaid.“Christinecanhelpme.”

Nowtherewasenoughmoney.WeallfeltverygoodbecausewedidnothavetogodowntownanddrawmoneyoutofMama’sBankAccount.SomanythingscameoutoftheLittleBankthatyear:
