OnNovember9,1874,NewYorknewspaper,TheHerald,ranashockingstoryonitsfrontpage.ItsaidthatalltheanimalsintheCentralParkZoohadescapedandwererunningaroundthecity.Itsaidthepolicewereworkingtosavepeople,but27peoplehadalreadybeenkilled,and200peoplehurt.Itwarnedeveryonetostayathometoavoidthedanger.ManypeopleinNewYorkwereterrified,anddidasthepapersaid.Ifonlytheyhadreadthefinalwordsofthearticle,whichsaid:

“Notonewordofitistrue.Notasingleactdescribedhastakenplace,”Itwasalljustahoax.ThestorywasmadeupbyThomasConnery,aneditoratTheHerald,whowantedtodrawattentiontothepoorconditionofcagesinthezoo.
