Halfofthegrandparentswhocaredforgrandchildrenwerestillalivetenyearsaftertheinitialinterview.Thesamewastrueforparticipantswhodidnothavegrandchildrenbutsupportedtheiradultchildreninsomeway,suchashelpingwithhousework.Incontrastabouthalfoftheparticipantswhodidnothelpothersdiedwithinfiveyearsafterthestartofthestudy.

“Caregivingmaybethoughtalsoasanactivitythatkeepscaregiversphysicallyandmentallyactive,”saidProfessorArpino,addingthatpreviousstudiessuggestthatcaregivingmayimprovecognitivefunctioning,mentalandphysicalhealth.

Arpinonoted,however,thatcaregivingisnottheonlyactivitythatcanimprovehealth,andtoomanycaringresponsibilitiescantakeawaybenefitsfromotheractivitieslikeworking,beinginsocialclubs,orvolunteering.
