TheExtensibleMarkupLanguage（XML）isalanguageforencodingdocumentscontainingstructuredinformation.XMLhasverybroadapplication,butiswidelyrecognizedasarapidlyemergingstandardformovingdataovertheInternet.XMLfilesarebasicallystructuredtextfilesandcanbeviewedjustasyouwouldanyotherfilecontainingtextualinformation.Itismuchmorethanjustsimpletext,however,becauseitisalsoeasilyunderstoodbycomputersoftware.FormoreintroductoryinformationonXMLseeXMLin10PointsfromtheW3C.

ThepowerofthegrowingXMLmarketplaceaffordstheoilandgascommunitytheopportunitytoleveragetheXMLorganizationsandsoftwarethatarebeingcreatedtotremendousadvantage.Byadoptingthisnewtechnology,industrycanlowerthecostofmaintainingandexchangingwelllogdataandmoreeasilyexploittheInternetrevolutiontogreatlyimprovetheefficiencyofdoingbusiness.

TheobjectiveofthisprojectistospecifyanXML-basedmarkuplanguagefordefinitionsofgraphicpresentationsofWellLogdata.AschemaspecificationusingtheXMLSchemastandardhasbeenpublished.Mostofthecommonwellloggraphicobjectsaresupportedinthisinitialrelease,includingtrack,index,channel,trace,pip,andfillarea.

AProposedStandardforthePresentationofWellLogandRelatedInformation

Technologycontinuestotransformthewaywedistributewelllogs.Comparedtothetraditionalwaysofdispatchingtapesandfaxes,wearenowaccustomedtosendingemailswithreportsandattachments.OngoinginitiativessuchasXMLprovidethemeanstocombinethedeliveryofwelldataandplotinformationintoasingle,seamlessprocess.LastyearsawtheemergenceoftwoXMLstandards:

POSCisalsoworkingwiththeBLMtohelptheminvestigateXMLforelectronicsubmissionofregulatorydata.Thisprojectshowshowthreecommonregulatoryreportscanbedefined,capturedandpresentedinXML.

ProductionML/Reporting

ThisisaprojecttodevelopanXMLDTDforuseinreportingwelltests,monthlyandannualproductionandperformanceforecaststoregulatoryagencies.WehaveconstructedapreliminaryDTDforreportingonwells,reservoirsbywell,fields,leases/licensesandfacilities.AnothergoalofthisprojectistoinvestigatethepossibilitytocreateandmaintainacustomizedDTDasthesourcespecificationevolves.

ThedescriptionofwellschematicsinXMListhesubjectofthisproposedproject.Thescopeistheentirewell,includingthewellheadandmultiplewellbores,boreholes,casingandtubingstrings,surfaceanddownholeequipment,perforationsandopenholeintervals,surveypointsandworkover（intervention）intervals.
