YoungGoodmanBrowncameforth,atsunset,intothestreetofSalemvillage,butputhisheadback,aftercrossingthethreshold,toexchangeapartingkisswithhisyoungwife.AndFaith,asthewifewasaptlynamed,thrustherownprettyheadintothestreet,lettingthewindplaywiththepinkribbonsofhercap,whileshecalledtoGoodmanBrown.

“Dearestheart,”whisperedshe,softlyandrathersadly,whenherlipswereclosetohisear,“pr'ythee,putoffyourjourneyuntilsunrise,andsleepinyourownbedto-night.Alonewomanistroubledwithsuchdreamsandsuchthoughts,thatshe'safeardofherself,sometimes.Pray,tarrywithmethisnight,dearhusband,ofallnightsintheyear!

“MyloveandmyFaith,”repliedyoungGoodmanBrown,“ofallnightsintheyear,thisonenightmustItarryawayfromthee.Myjourney,asthoucallestit,forthandbackagain,mustneedsbedone'twixtnowandsunrise.What,mysweet,prettywife,costthoudoubtmealready,andwebutthreemonthsmarried!

“Then,Godblessyou!

” saidFaith,withthepinkribbons,“andmayyoufindallwell,whenyoucomeback.”

“Amen!

”criedGoodmanBrown.“Saythyprayers,dearFaith,andgotobedatdusk,andnoharmwillcometothee.”

Sotheyparted;andtheyoungmanpursuedhisway,until,beingabouttoturnthecornerbythemeeting-house,helookedback,andsawtheheadofFaithstillpeepingafterhim,withamelancholyair,inspiteofherpinkribbons.

“PoorlittleFaith!

”thoughthe,forhisheartsmotehim.“WhatawretchamI,toleaveheronsuchanerrand!

Shetalksofdreams,too.Methought,asshespoke,therewastroubleinherface,asifadreamhadwarnedherwhatworkistobedoneto-night.But,no,no!

'twouldkillhertothinkit.Well;she'sablessedangelonearth;andafterthisonenight,I'llclingtoherskirtsandfollowhertoHeaven.”

Withthisexcellentresolveforthefuture,GoodmanBrownfelthimselfjustifiedinmakingmorehasteonhispresentevilpurpose.Hehadtakenadrearyroad,darkenedbyallthegloomiesttreesoftheforest,whichbarelystoodasidetoletthenarrowpathcreepthrough,andclosedimmediatelybehind.Itwasallaslonelyascouldbe;andthereisthispeculiarityinsuchasolitude,thatthetravellerknowsnotwhomaybeconcealedbytheinnumerabletrunksandthethickboughsoverhead;sothat,withlonelyfootsteps,hemayyetbepassingthroughanunseenmultitude.

“TheremaybeadevilishIndianbehindeverytree,”saidGoodmanBrown,tohimself;andheglancedfearfullybehindhim,asheadded,“Whatifthedevilhimselfshouldbeatmyveryelbow!

Hisheadbeingturnedback,hepassedacrookoftheroad,andlookingforwardagain,beheldthefigureofaman,ingraveanddecentattire,seatedatthefootofanoldtree.Hearose,atGoodmanBrown’sapproach,andwalkedonward,sidebysidewithhim.

“Youarelate,GoodmanBrown,”saidhe.“TheclockoftheOldSouthwasstrikingasIcamethroughBoston;andthatisfullfifteenminutesagone.”

“Faithkeptmebackawhile,”repliedtheyoungman,withatremorinhisvoice,causedbythesuddenappearanceofhiscompanion,thoughnotwhollyunexpected.

Itwasnowdeepduskintheforest,anddeepestinthatpartofitwherethesetwowerejourneying.Asnearlyascouldbediscerned,thesecondtravellerwasaboutfiftyyearsold,apparentlyinthesamerankoflifeasGoodmanBrown,andbearingaconsiderableresemblancetohim,thoughperhapsmoreinexpressionthanfeatures.Still,theymighthavebeentakenforfatherandson.Andyet,thoughtheelderpersonwasassimplycladastheyounger,andassimpleinmannertoo,hehadanindescribableairofonewhoknewtheworld,andwouldnothavefeltabashed(shamed)atthegovernor'sdinner-table,orinKingWilliam'scourt,wereitpossiblethathisaffairsshouldcallhimthither.Buttheonlythingabouthim,thatcouldbefixeduponasremarkable,washisstaff,whichborethelikenessofagreatblacksnake,socuriouslywrought,thatitmightalmostbeseentotwistandwriggleitself,likealivingserpent.This,ofcourse,musthavebeenanocular(眼睛的)deception,assistedbytheuncertainlight.

“Come,GoodmanBrown!

”criedhisfellow-traveller,“thisisadullpaceforthebeginningofajourney.Takemystaff,ifyouaresosoonweary.”

“Friend,”saidtheother,exchanginghisslowpaceforafullstop,“havingkeptcovenant(appointment)bymeetingtheehere,itismypurposenowtoreturnwhence(=where)Icame.Ihavescruples,touchingthematterthouwot'stof.”

“Sayestthouso?

”repliedheoftheserpent,smilingapart.“Letuswalkon,nevertheless,reasoningaswego,andifIconvincetheenot,thoushaltturnback.Wearebutalittlewayintheforest,yet.”

“Toofar,toofar!

”exclaimedthegoodmanunconsciouslyresuminghiswalk.“Myfatherneverwentintothewoodsonsuchanerrand,norhisfatherbeforehim.WehavebeenaraceofhonestmenandgoodChristians,sincethedaysofthemartyrs.AndshallIbethefirstofthenameofBrown,thatevertookthispath,andkept—”

“Suchcompany,thouwouldstsay,”observedtheelderperson,interpretinghispause.“Wellsaid,GoodmanBrown!

IhavebeenaswellacquaintedwithyourfamilyaswitheveraoneamongthePuritans;andthat'snotrifletosay.Ihelpedyourgrandfather,theconstable,whenhelashedtheQuakerwomansosmartlythroughthestreetsofSalem.AnditwasIthatbroughtyourfatherapitch-pineknot,kindledatmyownhearth,tosetfiretoanIndianvillage,inKingPhilip'swar.Theyweremygoodfriends,both;andmanyapleasantwalkhavewehadalongthispath,andreturnedmerrilyaftermidnight.Iwouldfainbefriendswithyou,fortheirsake.”

“Ifitbeasthousayest,”repliedGoodmanBrown,“Imarveltheyneverspokeofthesematters.Or,verily(真正地),Imarvelnot,seeingthattheleastrumorofthesortwouldhavedriventhemfromNew-England.Weareapeopleofprayer,andgoodworks,toboot(引导),andabidenosuchwickedness.”

“Wickednessornot,”saidthe.travellerwiththetwistedstaff,“IhaveaverygeneralacquaintancehereinNew-England.Thedeaconsofmanyachurchhavedrunkthecommunionwinewithme;theselectmen,ofdiverstowns,makemetheirchairman;andamajorityoftheGreatandGeneralCourtarefirmsupportersofmyinterest.ThegovernorandI,too—butthesearestate-secrets.”

“Canthisbeso!

”criedGoodmanBrown,withastareofamazementathisundisturbedcompanion.“Howbeit(However),Ihavenothingtodowiththegovernorandcouncil;theyhavetheirownways,andarenoruleforasimplehusbandman,likeme.But,wereItogoonwiththee,howshouldImeettheeyeofthatgoodoldman,ourminister,atSalemvillage?

Oh,hisvoicewouldmakemetremble,bothSabbath-dayandlecture-day!

Thusfar,theeldertravellerhadlistenedwithduegravity,butnowburstintoafitofirrepressiblemirth(高兴),shakinghimselfsoviolently,thathissnake-likestaffactuallyseemedtowriggleinsympathy.

“Ha!

ha!

ha!

”shoutedhe,againandagain;thencomposinghimself,“Well,goon,GoodmanBrown,goon;butpr'ythee,don'tkillmewithlaughing!

“Well,then,toendthematteratonce,”saidGoodmanBrown,considerablynettled(upset),“thereismywife,Faith.Itwouldbreakherdearlittleheart;andI'dratherbreakmyown!

“Nay,ifthatbethecase,”answeredtheother,“e'engothyways,GoodmanBrown.Iwouldnot,fortwentyoldwomenliketheonehobblingbeforeus,thatFaithshouldcometoanyharm.”

Ashespoke,hepointedhisstaffatafemalefigureonthepath,inwhomGoodmanBrownrecognizedaverypiousandexemplarydame,whohadtaughthimhiscatechism(教义问答),inyouth,andwasstillhismoralandspiritualadviser,jointlywiththeministerandDeaconGookin.

“Amarvel,truly,thatGoodyCloyseshouldbesofarinthewilderness,atnight-fall!

”saidhe.“But,withyourleave,friend,Ishalltakeacutthroughthewoods,untilwehaveleftthisChristianwomanbehind.Bringastrangertoyou,shemightaskwhomIwasconsortingwith,andwhitherIwasgoing.”

“Beitso,”saidhisfellow-traveller.“Betake(专心于)youtothewoods,andletmekeepthepath.”

Accordingly,theyoungmanturnedaside,buttookcaretowatchhiscompanion,whoadvancedsoftlyalongtheroad,untilhehadcomewithinastaff'slengthoftheolddame.She,meanwhile,wasmakingthebestofherway,withsingularspeedforsoagedawoman,andmumblingsomeindistinctwords,aprayer,doubtless,asshewent.Thetravellerputforthhisstaff,andtouchedherwitheredneckwithwhatseemedtheserpent'stail.

“Thedevil!

”screamedthepiousoldlady.

“ThenGoodyCloyseknowsheroldfriend?

”observedthetraveller,confrontingher,andleaningonhiswrithingstick.

“Ah,forsooth(真的,的确,确实),andisityourworship,indeed?

”criedthegooddame.“Yea,trulyisit,andintheveryimageofmyoddgossip,GoodmanBrown,thegrandfatherofthesillyfellowthatnowis.But—wouldyourworshipbelieveit?

—mybroomstickhathstrangelydisappeared,stolen,asIsuspect,bythatunhangedwitch,GoodyCory,andthat,too,whenIwasallanointed(涂、抹)withthejuiceofsmallageandcinque-foilandwolf's-bane—”

“Mingledwithfinewheatandthefatofanew-bornbabe,”saidtheshapeofoldGoodmanBrown.

“Ah,yourworshipknowsthereceipt,”criedtheoldlady,cacklingaloud.“So,asIwassaying,beingallreadyforthemeeting,andnohorsetorideon,Imadeupmymindtofootit;fortheytellme,thereisaniceyoungmantobetakenintocommunionto-night.Butnowyourgoodworshipwilllendmeyourarm,andweshallbethereinatwinkling.”
