Kwanzaaisveryunusualbecauseitwasstartedbyoneman.In1966,anAmericannamedMaulanaKarengawantedaholidayforAfrican-Americanstohonortheircultureandtraditions.SoheusedwordsandcustomsfromAfricatocreateanewcelebration.HetookthenameKwanzaafromthewordsfor“firstfruits”inSwahili,anAfricanlanguage.Atfirst,afewAmericanfamilieshadsmallcelebrationsathome.NowtherearealsoKwanzaaeventsinschoolsandpublicplaces,andKwanzaahasspreadtoothercountrieslikeCanadaandJamaica.
