  LuXunisone ofthegreatestChinese writersofthe20thcentury.Besideshisfamousstories, healsowrote many influential articlesaboutthelivingconditionsof Chinesepeople.

 Bornin1881to awealthyfamily,Lu Xunhadahappy childhood. In1893, however, hisgrandfather,asenior governmentofficial,wasputintoprisonfortakingmoney. At thesametime,hisfatherbecameseriouslyill.Fromthat timeon, hisfamilywereno longer acceptedbytheirrelatives andfriends. Theseearlyexperiencesgraetlyinfluencedhiswriting.

   BythetimeLu Xunarrived inNanjing tostudyatuniversityin1899,he alreadybelievedthatChinesesocietyhadtochangeand becomemodern.In1902hewentto studyin Japan.There,hebeganwritingarticlesfor severalChinesestudentmagazines. He showedagiftforwritingandtranslatingandheevenwrote severalbooks,althoughnonewaspopular. HereturnedtoChinain1909 becausehewasinneedofmoney.

  Afterworking forseveralyearsasateacherinBeijing, Lu Xun againreturned towriting.In1918,he wrote hisfamousshortstoryDiaryofa Madman.It wasthefirst Chinesenovelpublishedusingthe everydaylanguagethatpeoplespoke, whichhelpedmake ita great success.This,together withhisnovelThe TrueStory ofAhQ(1921),madeLu Xunaleading Chinesewriter.

 Although successful,LuXun still worriedgreatlyabout China’s future.In1926, hemovedtoShanghaiand gaveupwritingstoriesinordertodevotehimselftowhathe calleed“pen warfare”.Henow only wrotearticleswhichcalledonthepeopletofightagainst thegovernment.For this,thegovernmentstopped himfrompublishingany morebooks. He was forcedto write hisarticles usingfalse names.

Sincehisdeathin1936,LuXun’simportanceandinfluence havegrown.Today,manyofhis writingsareincluded inschooltextbooksandhisworksarereadby millions aroundthe world.
