Butwhenwestartthinkingoflanguagemoreintermsofstylethanvocabularyorspelling,adifferentpictureappears.SomeofthebiggertrendsinAmericanEnglisharemovingtowardsafreeruseoflanguage.Americansentencesareonaverageonewordshorterin2006thantheywerein1931.

Americansalsousealotmoreapostrophes(撇号)intheirwritingthantheyusedto,whichhastheeffectofturningthetwowords“donot”intothesingle“don’t”.“Thehandoftheking”becomestheshorter“Theking’shand”.

However,inallthesewaysBritsarechangingtoo—andinthesamewayasAmericans.They’rejustabout30yearsbehindthetrendthatAmericansseemtobeleading.
