Hekepttherunofmealtimes,andwaspresentatasmanymealsaspossible;thatis,hewouldgofrommybreakfasttohalfadozenothers,andbegsomethingateach.Hewasveryfondofboiledmeat-particularlyboiledfish-andwasconstantlypickingbones.Hewantedalwaystotastemycoffee,andwouldbegofme,inthemostseriousmanner,forsome.

Forsometimepastithasbeenwidelyacceptedthatbabies-andothercreatures-learntodothingsbecausecertainactsleadto“rewards”;andthereisnoreasontodoubtthatthisistrue.Butitusedalsotobewidelybelievedthateffectivereward,atleastintheearlystages,hadtobedirectlyrelatedtosuchbasicphysiological“drives”asthirstorhunger.Inotherwords,ababywouldlearnifhegotfoodordrinkorsomesortofphysicalcomfort,nototherwise.
