JOHANNESBURG,Aug.18(Xinhua)--AnestimatedhalfamillionSouthAfricanchildrenwithdisabilitieshavebeenshutoutofthecountry’seducationsystem,areportrevealedonTuesday.ThereportwasjointlyreleasedinJohannesburgbytheHumanRightsWatchatajointeventwithSouthAfricanHumanRightsCommission.
Widespreaddiscriminationandnegativeattitudesagainstchildrenwithdisabilitieswereidentifiedaskeybarriersthathavekeptthesechildrenoutofformaleducation,saidthereport.
ElinMartinez,ResearcherintheChildrenRightsdivisionoftheHumanRightsWatch,saidthesebarriersshouldberemovedasamatterofurgency.“Childrenwithdisabilitiesareturneddowninmainstreamschoolsandaskedtogotospecialschoolswheretheydonotbelong.”saidMartinez.
“Noonehascarriedoutanadequateassessmenttounderstandthebestlearningenvironmentforthem.Theyaresimplysentoutthereandplacedonthewaitinglistwheretheycanwaituptofouryears,”addedtheresearcher.
