Scientistsalreadyknewthattheparasitewasthereasonforthefrogdeformities.TheywantedtofindoutwhetherknownhotspotsofRibeiroiapopulationsinfourwesternstateshadchangedsincetheywerelastsurveyedin1999.
Soin2010PieterJohnson,anexpertattheUniversityofColorado,andhisteamgathereddataoffrogsand
parasitesin48wetlandsinAmerica.Theyfoundthattheparasiteinfectionswerestillcommoninfrogs.
“Wefoundthat,althoughthedistributionofRibeiroiaacrosswetlandschanged,therewaslittleneteffectonoverallparasitespreading,with31percentofwetlandsgainingtheparasiteand27percentlosingtheparasite,”Johnsonsaid.“Butwhatwasmostsurprisingwasthatthelocationshadchangedgreatlyoverthelastdecade.”
Forinstance,pondswherescientistshadfoundfewdeformedfrogsin1999nowhad30percentormorefrogswithdeformedlegs,hesaid.Likewise,formerhotspotsnowhadfewerofthesefrogs,accordingtotheirresults.
TheRibeiroiaparasitehasacomplexlifecycle,whichbeginswiththesnail,acreaturecommoninmanywesternUSWetlands.Itfirstlivesinsidethesnailandthengoestoliveinatadpole(蝌蚪).Itthenentersthetadpole'stissueandthedevelopinglegs.Consequently,whenthetadpolebeginstotransformintoafrog,its“primarysystemofmovementdoesn'twork—itcan'tjumporswim,”Johnsonsaid.“That'swhenthebirds”—theparasite'sfinalhost—“comeandeattheyoungfrogslikepopcorn.”Theparasitethenreproducesinsidethebirds.Whenthebirdsdefecate(排泄),theparasiteeggswillgooutofthebirdsandmaketheirwaybackintothesnails.
ThoughtheRibeiroiaparasiteoccursnaturallyinNorthAmerica,humanactivitieslikelyhavesomethingtodowithitspopulation,Johnsonnoted.Forinstance,thesnailsfeedonalgae(藻类).Thepollutedwaterfromagricultureandindustryintowetlandscontainsnutrientsthatimprovethealgaegrowth.Withmoresnailsinthewetlands,theparasiteshavemoreinitialhoststoinfect,Johnsonnoted.
