So,I'manartist.IliveinNewYork,andI'vebeenworkinginadvertisingfor--eversinceIleftschool,soaboutseven,eightyearsnow,anditwasdraining.Iworkedalotoflatenights.Iworkedalotofweekends,andIfoundmyselfneverhavingtimeforalltheprojectsthatIwantedtoworkononmyown.
AndonedayIwasatworkandIsawatalkbyStefanSagmeisteronTED,anditwascalled"Thepoweroftimeoff,"andhespokeabouthoweverysevenyears,hetakesayearofffromworksohecoulddohisowncreativeprojects,andIwasinstantlyinspired,andIjustsaid,"Ihavetodothat.Ihavetotakeayearoff.Ineedtotaketimetotravelandspendtimewithmyfamilyandstartmyowncreativeideas."
”
SothefirstofthoseprojectsendedupbeingsomethingIcalled"OneSecondEveryDay."BasicallyI'mrecordingonesecondofeverydayofmylifefortherestofmylife,chronologicallycompilingtheseone-secondtinyslicesofmylifeintoonesinglecontinuousvideountil,youknow,Ican'trecordthemanymore.
Thepurposeofthisprojectis,one:
IhatenotrememberingthingsthatI'vedoneinthepast.There'sallthesethingsthatI'vedonewithmylifethatIhavenorecollectionofunlesssomeonebringsitup,andsometimesIthink,"Ohyeah,that'ssomethingthatIdid."
”
AndsomethingthatIrealizedearlyonintheprojectwasthatifIwasn'tdoinganythinginteresting,Iwouldprobablyforgettorecordthevideo.Sotheday--thefirsttimethatIforgot,itreallyhurtme,becauseit'ssomethingthatIreallywantedto--fromthemomentthatIturned30,Iwantedtokeepthisprojectgoinguntilforever,andhavingmissedthatonesecond,Irealized,itjustkindofcreatedthisthinginmyheadwhereIneverforgoteveragain.
SoifIlivetosee80yearsofage,I'mgoingtohaveafive-hourvideothatencapsulates50yearsofmylife.WhenIturn40,I'llhaveaone-hourvideothatincludesjustmy30s.Thishasreallyinvigoratedmeday-to-day,whenIwakeup,totryanddosomethinginterestingwithmyday.
Now,oneofthethingsthatIhaveissueswithisthat,asthedaysandweeksandmonthsgoby,timejustseemstostartblurringandblendingintoeachotherand,youknow,Ihatedthat,andvisualizationisthewaytotriggermemory.Youknow,thisprojectformeisawayformetobridgethatgapandremembereverythingthatI'vedone.EvenjustthisonesecondallowsmetoremembereverythingelseIdidthatoneday.
It'sdifficult,sometimes,topickthatonesecond.Onagoodday,I'llhavemaybethreeorfoursecondsthatIreallywanttochoose,butI'lljusthavetonarrowitdowntoone,butevennarrowingitdowntothatoneallowsmetoremembertheotherthreeanyway.
It'salsokindofaprotest,apersonalprotest,againsttheculturewehavenowwherepeoplejustareatconcertswiththeircellphonesoutrecordingthewholeconcert,andthey'redisturbingyou.They'renotevenenjoyingtheshow.They'rewatchingtheconcertthroughtheircellphone.Ihatethat.
Iadmittedlyusedtobethatguyalittlebit,backintheday,andI'vedecidedthatthebestwayformetostillcaptureandkeepavisualmemoryofmylifeandnotbethatperson,istojustrecordthatonesecondthatwillallowmetotriggerthatmemoryof,"Yeah,thatconcertwasamazing.Ireallylovedthatconcert."Anditjusttakesaquick,quicksecond.
Iwasonathree-monthroadtripthissummer.ItwassomethingthatI'vebeendreamingaboutdoingmywholelife,justdrivingaroundtheU.S.andCanadaandjustfiguringoutwheretogothenextday,anditwaskindofoutstanding.Iactuallyranout,IspenttoomuchmoneyonmyroadtripforthesavingsthatIhadtotakemyyearoff,soIhadto,IwenttoSeattleandIspentsometimewithfriendsworkingonareallyneatproject.
OneofthereasonsthatItookmyyearoffwastospendmoretimewithmyfamily,andthisreallytragicthinghappenedwheremysister-in-law,herintestinesuddenlystrangledoneday,andwetookhertotheemergencyroom,andshewas,shewasinreallybadshape.Wealmostlostheracoupleoftimes,andIwastherewithmybrothereveryday.Ithelpedmerealizesomethingelseduringthisproject,isthatrecordingthatonesecondonareallybaddayisextremelydifficult.It'snot--wetendtotakeourcamerasoutwhenwe'redoingawesomethings.
Orwe're,"Oh,yeah,thisparty,letmetakeapicture."Butwerarelydothatwhenwe'rehavingabadday,andsomethinghorribleishappening.AndIfoundthatit'sactuallybeenvery,veryimportanttorecordevenjustthatonesecondofareallybadmoment.Itreallyhelpsyouappreciatethegoodtimes.It'snotalwaysagoodday,sowhenyouhaveabadone,Ithinkit'simportanttorememberit,justasmuchasitisimportanttorememberthe[good]days.
NowoneofthethingsthatIdoisIdon'tuseanyfilters,Idon'tuseanythingto--ItrytocapturethemomentasmuchaspossibleasthewaythatIsawitwithmyowneyes.Istartedaruleoffirstpersonperspective.Earlyon,IthinkIhadacoupleofvideoswhereyouwouldseemeinit,butIrealizedthatwasn'tthewaytogo.ThewaytoreallyrememberwhatIsawwastorecorditasIactuallysawit.
NowacoupleofthingsthatIhaveinmyheadaboutthisprojectare,wouldn'titbeinterestingifthousandsofpeopleweredoingthis?
Iturned31lastweek,whichisthere.Ithinkitwouldbeinterestingtoseewhateveryonedidwithaprojectlikethis.Ithinkeveryonewouldhaveadifferentinterpretationofit.Ithinkeveryonewouldbenefitfromjusthavingthatonesecondtoremembereveryday.
Personally,I'mtiredofforgetting,andthisisareallyeasythingtodo.Imean,weallhaveHD-capablecamerasinourpocketsrightnow--mostpeopleinthisroom,Ibet--andit'ssomethingthat's--IneverwanttoforgetanotherdaythatI'veeverlived,andthisismywayofdoingthat,andit'dbereallyinterestingalsotosee,ifyoucouldjusttypeinonawebsite,"June18,20xx,"andyouwouldjustseeastreamofpeople'slivesonthatparticulardayfromallovertheworld.
AndIdon'tknow,Ithinkthisprojecthasalotofpossibilities,andIencourageyoualltorecordjustasmallsnippetofyourlifeeveryday,soyoucanneverforgetthatthatday,youlived.
Thankyou.(Applause)
