Introduction

TheGreatWallofChina:

dynasties,dragons&warriorsexhibitiongivesstudentstheopportunitytodiscovermoreaboutoneoftheworld’sgreatestancientcivilizations.Studentswillbeabletogaininsightsintotheextraordinary2000-yearhistoryofChinafromthecollectionsofartefactsondisplay.ThisLOTEunithasbeendevelopedtosupporttheExhibitiontobeheldattheMelbourneMuseumin2007andenhanceChineselanguagelearning.Activitiesinclude:

establishingpriorknowledge,practisingChinesecalligraphy,learningaboutChinesemeasurementandmoney,andcreatingpresentations.Itisimportantthatstudentsbewell-preparedfortheirMelbourneMuseumvisit.

”TellstudentsthatChinaisoneoftheworld’soldestcivilizations,datingbackmorethan3,000years.IntroducetheGreatWallofChina长城,inChineseifpossible.DiscusswhyformanypeoplethesymbolofChinaisitsGreatWall.Askstudentstodefinethetermsdynasty,emperor,artefact,andcivilization.ExplainthatcentralizedgovernmentwasestablishedandterritorywasexpandedduringtheQinDynasty.it’stheQinDynasty’sgreatestachievementwastheGreatWall,whenseparatesmallerwallswerelinkedupunderQinShinghuang秦始皇,whichmeans“firstemperor”.

WritingdevelopedinChinaduringtheShangDynasty商atleast1500BCEanditwasstandardisedin221BCEbyEmperorQin–QinShinghuang秦始皇.

Paintingandcalligraphywereverymuchconnected.Thesametoolsandskillswereused.Calligraphygavepaintingvitality,rhythmoflineandeconomyofstrokes.

Calligraphywasalsoverymuchapartofapaintingandconsideredjustasbeautifulasamountainorstream.

ShowstudentssomeChinesecalligraphy,explainingthatitisanancientChineseartformdatingback3,000yearswithcharactersthatbeganaspictures.

TheForbiddenCityusesredandyellowheavily.RedwasasacredcolourinMongolia,representingfestivalsandweddingsinChina;andthecolouryellowwasalsosacred,representingprosperity.Askstudentstocomparethesymbolismofcoloursindifferentcultures,anddiscusshowanunderstandingofcoloursymbolismisimportantinrelatingtopeoplefromadifferentculture.

Attheexhibition,studentsareaskedtousetheirimaginationtodrawthefirstemperor–QinShinghuang秦始皇.Theythencolourthepictureinthecolourstheyconsiderappropriateintermsoftimeandculture,andlabelthecoloursinChinese.
