B

I was askedto pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in

meeting me.I was told it would mean a great deal to him,so I agreed.

During the nine-mile drive to his home,I found out something about Matthew.He had muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩).When he was born,the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five.Now he was thirteen.He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter,and I knew about overcoming barriers and going for my dreams.

I spent over an hour talking to Matthew.Never once did he complain or ask,"Why me?

"He spoke about going for his dreams.He didn't mention that his classmates had made fun of him.He just talked about his hopes for the future,and one day he wanted to lift weights with me.When we finished talking,I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck.I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming harriers than I ever would.He looked at it for a moment,then took it off and handed it back to me.He said,"You are a champion.You earned that medal.Some day when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal,I will show it to you."

Last summer I received a letter from Mathew's parents telling me that Matthew hadpassed away. It read:

Dear Dick,

My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me.I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don't have long to live any more,but I still smile as much as I can.

I told you someday that I would win a gold medal,but I know now I will never get to do that.However,I know I'm a champion.Thank you for loving me.

Your friend,

Matthew

Have you ever heard the old saying,"Never judge a book by its cover"?

This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence(智力)of others.Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations.A young person with an unusual gift in writing may find himself speechless in the presence of a pretty girl when he speaks.He may not be able to find the rightwords.But don't make the mistake of thinking him stupid.With a pen and a paper,he can express himself better than anybody else.

Other people may foolyou into overestimating(过高估计)their intelligence by putting up a good front.A student who listens attentively and takes notes in class is sure to make a favorable impression on his teachers.But when it comes to exams,he may score near the bottom of the class.

It all boils down to this:

you can't judge someone by appearance.The only way to determine(测定)a person's intelligence is to get to know him.Then you can see how he reacts(反应)to different situations.The more situations you see,the better your judgment is likely to be.So take your time.Don't judge a book by its cover.

28.The passage suggests that.

A.a good writer may not be a good speaker

B.a good writer is always a good speaker

C.a speechless person always writes well

D.a good writerwill find himself speechless

29.According to this passage,a student who listens attentively and take notes in class.

A.is an intelligent student

B.may not be an intelligent student

C.will score better in exams

D.will not be a good student

30.The passage suggests that we should judge a person's intelligence through.

A.his teachers

B.his deeds in the classroom

C.his appearance

D.his reaction to different situations

31.The writer of this passage wants to tell us.

A.not to judge a book by the cover

B.not to make the mistake of thinking a young man stupid

C.not to overestimate a student's intelligence

D.not to judge person's intelligence by his appearance
