ItwasasimpleletteraskingforaplacetostudyatScotland'soldestuniversitywhichhelpedstartarevolutioninhighereducation.A140yearoldletterwrittenbyaladycallingforhertobeallowedtostudymedicineatStAndrewsUniversityhasbeendiscoveredbyresearchers.WrittenbySophiaJexBlakein1873，thesevenpagedocument，whichurgedtheuniversitytoallowwomentostudymedicineattheinstitution，wasreleasedyesterdayonInternationalWomen'sDay.

Thedocumentwasdiscoveredburiedintheuniversityarchives（档案）byparttimehistorystudentLisSmith，whoiscompletingherPhDatStAndrewsInstituteofScottishHistoricalResearch.Shesaid:

“WeknewthatSophiaJexBlakeandhersupporters，intheirefforttoopenupuniversitymedicaleducationforwomen，hadwrittentotheSenatusAcademicus（校评议委员会）atStAndrewsinanattempttogainpermissiontoattendclassesthere，butwedidn'tknowdocumentaryevidenceexisted.Whilesearchingthearchivesforinformationabouttheuniversity'shighercertificateforwomen，IwasastonishedtocomeacrosswhatmustbetheveryletterJexBlakewrote.”

Intheletter，SophiaandhersupportersofferedtohireteachersorbuildsuitablebuildingsforamedicalschoolandtoarrangeforlecturestobedeliveredinthesubjectsnotalreadycoveredatStAndrews.Althoughherletterwasnotsuccessful，iteventuallyledtotheestablishmentoftheLadiesLiterateinArtsatStAndrews，adistancelearningdegreeforwomen.Thequalification，whichranfrom1877untilthe1930s，gavewomenaccesstouniversityeducationinthedaysbeforetheywereadmittedasstudents.ItwassopopularthatitsurvivedlongafterwomenwereadmittedasfullstudentstoStAndrewsin1892.

MsJexBlakewentontohelpestablishtheLondonSchoolofMedicineforWomenin1874.ShewasacceptedbytheUniversityofBerne，whereshewasawardedamedicaldegreeinJanuary1877.Eventually，shemovedbacktoEdinburghandopenedherownpractice.
