 A newreportshowsthattherearejust7,100cheetahsnowleftinthewild.Cheetahsareintroublenow.

   According tothestudy,morethanhalfoftheworld’ssurvivingcheetahsliveinonezonethatcoverssixcountriesinsouthernAfrica.CheetahsinAsiahavenearlydiedout.It’sthoughtthatonlyfewerthan50cheetahsliveinIran.

   The cheetahrunsacrosslandsfaroutsideprotectedareas.Some77%oftheirhabitatfallsoutsidetheseprotectedareas.Asaresult,thecheetahstrugglesbecausetheselandsareincreasinglybeingdevelopedbyfarmersandthecheetah’sfoodisdecreasingbecauseofhumanhunting.

   In Zimbabwe,thecheetahpopulationhasfallenfromaround1,200tojust170in16years,withthemaincausebeingmajorchangesinlandownership.

   Researchers saythatthethreatscheetahsarefacinghavegoneunnoticedforfartoolong. “Giventhenatureofthecheetah,ithasbeendifficulttogatherinformationonthem,” saidDrSarahDurant,thereport’sleadauthor. “Ourfindingsshowthatthelargespacerequirementsforcheetahsandvariousthreatsfacedbytheminthewildmeanthattheyarelikelytobeindangerofdyingout.”

   Anotherbigconcernaboutcheetahshasbeentheillegaltrafficking(非法交易)ofyoungcheetahs.Theyoungcatscanfetchupto$10,000ontheblackmarket.Some1,200youngcheetahsareknowntohavebeentraffickedoutofAfricaoverthepast10yearsbutaround85%ofthemdiedduringthejourney.
