Sometimesinterpretersmaycomeacrossdifficultwordsthattheycannotunderstand.Inthissituation,interpretersshouldacquiretheabilitytoguessthemeaningsthroughthecontext.

Therearetwotypesofcontext,i.e.verbalcontextandnon-verbalcontext.Onthelinguisticlevel,interpreterscanguessthemeaningofawordfromthepreviousorfollowingutterance.Forinstance,somewordswillbefollowedbyanattributiveclauseoranappositiveclausetofurtherexplainwhatitmeans.Moreover,interpreterscanguessthemeaningbasedonthelogicofthecontext.Besides,quiteoftenspeakerswillstateanopinionrepeatedly,sotherearedifferentwordswithsimilarmeanings,whichhelpsustograspthemeaning.

Asforthenon-verbalcontext,interpretersshouldlearntoguessthemeaningaccordingtothetheme,content,toneofthespeech,eventheaudience.Therefore,itisveryessentialtobefamiliarwiththebackgroundinformationbeforedoinginterpreting.
