Harrison-Bentzen,astudentattheUniversityofCentralLancashireinPreston,England,sayssherefusedtotakeRobbie’smoneyandfoundanotherwaytogethome.Butfollowingherencounter(偶然相遇)withthegenerousman,shesaysshecouldn’tgethimoutofhermind.

Forthenextfewdays,thestudentsearchedforRobbie,drivingaroundthestreetswithhermomandusingsocialmediainanattempttolocatetheman.Inthattime,HarrisonBentzensaysshelearnedmoreaboutRobbieanddiscoveredthatheactuallythatheactuallyhadareputationforhelpingstrangers.

Theperceptionofisolation—fromothersofbeinginthesocialaspect—isnotonlyacauseofunhappiness,italsosignalsdanger.Fishhaveevolvedtoswimtothemiddleoftheirgroupwhenpredators(捕食者)approach,micehousedinsocialisolationshowsleepdisruptionsandreducedslow-wavesleepandprairievoles(田鼠)isolatedfromtheirpartnersthenplacedinanopenfieldexploretheirsurroundingslessandconcentrateonavoidingpredators.

Thesebehavioursreflectanincreasedemphasisonself-preservationinthesocialaspect.Forinstance,fishontheedgeofaschoolaremorelikelytobeattackedbypredatorsbecausetheyareeasiertoisolateandpreyupon.Suchobservationsreflectamoregeneralprinciplethatperceivedsocialisolationinsocialanimalsactivatesneural(神经系统的),neuroendocrine(神经内分泌的)andbehaviouralresponsesthatpromoteshort-termself-preservation.However,theseresponsesbringacostforlong-termhealthandwell-being.

Therangeofharmfulneuralandbehaviouraleffectsofperceivedisolationdocumentedinadultsincludeincreasedanxiety,hostilityandsocialwithdrawal;fragmentedsleepanddaytimetiredness;increasedvascularresistanceandchangedgeneexpressionandimmunitydecreasedimpulsecontrol;increasednegativityanddepressivesymptoms;andincreasedage-relatedcognitivedecline.
