Firstup,thedevastationcausedbyacycloneinMyanmarismuchworsethanfirstreported.Wetoldyouyesterdayaboutthispowerfulstorm,whichpoundedtheAsiancountryovertheweekend.Myanmar'sgovernmentsaysmorethan10,000peoplewerekilledbythecyclone.Thedeadlystormbroughtwindsofupto150milesperhouranddrenchedpartsofthecountry,whichusedtobecalledBurma,with20inchesofrain.It'stheworstdisastertohitMyanmarinyears.Relieforganizationsareworkingtoprovideaidtothevictims.FirstLadyLauraBushoutlinedhowtheU.S.planstohelp.

LAURABUSH,U.S.FIRSTLADY:

TheU.S.hasofferedfinancialassistancethroughourembassy.We'llworkwiththeU.N.andotherinternational,non-governmentalorganizationstoprovidewater,sanitation,foodandshelter.Moreassistancewillbeforthcoming.TheUnitedStatesstandspreparedtoprovideanassistanceteamandmuchneededsuppliestoBurmaassoonastheBurmesegovernmentacceptsouroffer.ThegovernmentofBurmashouldacceptthisteamquicklyaswellasotheroffersofinternationalassistance.

Whileorganizationsarerushingtogethelptothevictimsofthiscyclone,thesurvivorsarestrugglingthroughthedamage:

thousandsofdownedtrees,noelectricity,diminishingsupplies.Andallofthiscomesjustoneweekbeforethecountrywassettovoteonitsconstitution.Here'smoreonthegovernment'splanforthatissueandtherecoveryeffortstakingplaceinMyanmar.

TheroadintoYangonisatangleofsplinteredwoodandfallentrees.Whatusedtobeashadyavenuehasbeenshreddedintoshardsoftimber;trunksthesizeofyachtmastssnappedlikematchsticks.Peoplearedoingtheirbesttoclearapaththroughthismayhem,butprogressisslow.Theluckyoneshavepowertools,buttheelectricitysupplyhasbeenofffortwodaysandfuelisinshortsupply.Thisisthelineforgas;itstretchesaroundtheblock.Already,thepricehasquadrupledtotendollarsagallon.Thosewhocanafforditarebuyingfuelontheblackmarketatthesideoftheroad.Buthowlongbeforethesesuppliesdryup?
