论电影《撞车》中的种族冲突与融合

摘要:

美国是一个多民族的国家，少数民族占据了总人口的百分之三十七。

尽管美国一直以来都标榜民主和自由，但这种所谓的民主和自由是充满悖论的。

很长时间以来，种族歧视问题一直困扰着美国社会。

电影《撞车》中反映的种族歧视问题是美国社会的一个缩影。

它的成功在于它尖锐地指出不仅白人歧视黑人、拉美裔人等少数民族，而且这些被歧视的少数民族也歧视白人并相互歧视。

但电影并没有以不同种族间的相互歧视收场，而是以爱、尊重、理解包容了彼此。

本文主要论述了电影《撞车》中反映的种族歧视及不同种族间是如何相互融合的。

Abstract:

Americaisacountryofmulti-nationalityandtheminoritygroupsconstitute37%ofthetotalpopulation.AlthoughAmericaboastsitsdemocracyandfreedomfromtimetotime,theso-calleddemocracyandfreedomareparadoxical.RacialdiscriminationisaproblemtroublingthewholeAmericansocietyforalongtime.RacialdiscriminationreflectedinthemoviecrashistheepitomeoftheAmericansociety.Crash’ssuccessliesinthatitsharplypointedoutthatnotonlydidthewhitediscriminateagainsttheblack,Latinosandotherminoritygroups,buttheseminoritygroupsbeingdiscriminatedwereagainstthewhiteanddiscriminateagainsteachother.Themoviedoesnotendupwithmutualdiscrimination,butwithlove,respectandunderstandingtotolerateeachother.Thisessaymainlydealswiththeracialdiscriminationreflectedinthemoviecrashandhowthemutualreconciliationisreachedamongdifferentraces.

1.Introduction

Racialdiscriminationisaproblemtroublingthewholesociety,especiallytroublingtheUnitedStatesforalongtime.AlthoughAmericaboastsitsfreedomanddemocracyfromtimetotime,theso-calledfreedomanddemocracyareuntrue.Manyblackarestilltreatedunequallyinvoting,education,employmentandhousing.Nowadays,intheageoftheglobalization,weliveinamulticulturalsocietyandwearebothpeace-lovingpeople.Itisessentialforustodotheresearchontheracismandstriveforthefreedom,equalityanddemocracy.Withthedevelopmentofthesociety,racialreconciliationisaninevitabletrend.Thougheliminatingtheracialdiscriminationisalongandpainfulprocessandcannotbeachievedovernight,weshouldfirmlybelievethatifweexamineitfromthehistory,socialandculture,politicalandeconomicalsystem,wecansettlethisproblem.

TheHollywoodmovieCrash,directedbyPaulHaggis,istheepitomeoftheAmericansociety.RacialdiscriminationistheparamountthemeinthismovieandHaggispresentedthethemethroughthemultiplecharactersandintricateplot.Inthemovie,Haggisunfoldstheimpressivethingstous:

familymembers,peopleinbusiness,andstrangers,reflectingthecomplicatedhumanity,theprejudiceondifferentclasses,and,aboveall,race.

Withregardtotheracialdiscrimination,ithascalledmanypeople’sattention.Scholarsfromallcountriesofdifferentsocialandculturalbackgroundshavemadesomeresearchonracialdiscriminationandthemoviefromdifferentangles.Fromdifferentpointsofview,theyhaveputforwardvariousideas:

LiJianming,on“TheEvolutionoftheStatusofNativeAmericanTribesandtheCivilRightsofIndians”describesthat“theU.S.governmentandthewhitecommunitieshavebeentryingunilaterallytocivilizetheAmericanIndians,eliminatetheirtribeswhichareregardedasbackwardanduncivilized,andremouldtribesmenintoAmericancitizens.However,theIndians,withtheiruniqueculturaltraditionandinferiortechnologicalskills,areunabletocompetewiththewhitepeople.Sowhatcivilrightscanbringthemareforthemostpartjustnewsufferings.”[1]Thispaperwillalsodemonstratetheoriginoftheracialdiscrimination.

PangHaolong,saidinhisarticle“CharacteristicsofAfricanAmericans:

SeenfromInvisibleMan,”“theracialdiscriminationstillexistedinAmericaintheearly20thcentury.Inordertosurviveandthrive,AfricanAmericanshadtotakethreemeasuressuchasservilesubmissiveness,wearingmasksandadvocatingseparation.ThehighpressureofwhitesocietyhadtorturedthepersonalityofAmericanblacksandfacilitatedtheformationofthespecificcharacteristicsoftheblackraceinAmerica.BothblacksandwhitesareAmericansandtheexpulsionofblacksoutofmainstreamofAmericansocietyisanact.”[2]

Muwendanka,writersof"BlackSkin,ASin”,concludedthat“sincehumanbeingareborn,thereexistedcontemptandhatredbetweenpeopleandthiskindofcontemptandhatredalsoexistedbetweendifferentraces.Thoughallthecountriesareagainsttheracialdiscrimination,itdoesexist.Intheimmigrantcountry,thecoloredpeople,especiallytheblackaretreatedunequallyinmanyaspects.Racialdiscriminationisnotapoliticalconception,buttheunequaltreatmentaccordingtothedifferentracesandcomplexion.”[3]Thispaperwillalsoillustratethatblackskinisnotasin.

LiuXiaoxia,in“Crash－AKeytoMindLock”,saysthat“theconnectionbetweenpeopleandtheculturalphenomenonshowedinCrashspecifythatthedifferentculturemaycausetheconflictbetweendifferentracesintheprocessoftheracialreconciliationandculturalcommunication.Atthesametime,beinginthevariousculturalatmospheres,becauseofthelossofthesenseofsecurityandmutualtrust,itcaneasilyleadtotheconflict.However,itistheconflictthatmakesustothinkofourlifefromdifferentperspectivesandtheattitudestowardspeople.”[4]

Nowadays,thoughtheracialdiscriminationstillexists,wecanseethereconciliationofdifferentraces.InAmerica,manyblackmenplayimportantrolesinpolitics,literature,economyandsoon.“Interculturalcommunicationiscommunicationbetweenpeoplewhoseculturalperceptionsandsymbolssystemsaredistinctenoughtoalterthecommunicationevent.”[5]However,eventhepeoplecomefromthedifferentracesandhavevariousbackgrounds,wecanusethelove,understandingandtolerancetopromotethecommunicationbetweentheraces.

Thispapermainlystudiestheracialconflictandreconciliation.Fromthelinesinthemovie“It’sasenseoftouch…Ithinkwemissthattouchsomuch,thatwecrashintoeachother,justsowecanfeelsomething”,wecanknowthetheme“crash”.Notonlydothewhitehaveprejudiceontheblack,buttheblackhaveprejudiceonthewhite.However,justasthemovieshows,wecanstimulatethereconciliationbetweenracesthroughlove,understandingandtolerancebetweenpeople.

2.RacialdiscriminationinAmerica

RacialdiscriminationhasexistedintheUnitedStatessincethecountrywasbuilt.Manypeopleofminoritygroupsaretreatedunequallyinmanyways.Blackpeoplecannotenjoytheequalconditionsinschools,hospitalsandbuses.Theyaresegregated.Schoolsforblacksaremuchworsethanthoseforwhites.Blackpeopleareemployed,butgivenlessmoney.Theyliveinpoverty.ThoughmanypeopleandlegislationhavemadeeffortstoalleviateinequalityinAmerica,however,wecannotdenythatWhitesstilldominatetheAmericansocietyallthetimeandtheyshowtheprejudiceontheminoritygroupsconsciouslyorunconsciously.

2.1ThepastsituationofracialdiscriminationinAmerica

“America’sracialdiscriminationandprejudiceontheblackhasbeencloselyrelatedtotheslaveryinthehistory.”[6]RacialdiscriminationisrootedinthehistoryofAmerica.SincethediscoveryoftheNewContinentbyColumbus,slavetradehadbeenwhatattractedgreedybusinessmenverymuch.ThousandsofmillionsofblackswerecapturedandsailedfromtheirmotherlandAfricatoAmericaaslabors.Blackssufferedalivingofthirty,hunger,thirsty,diseaseandcrowdedness.Theblackswereregardedasslaves.Theirmasterstookitforgrantedthattheyshouldworkalldayanditwastheirgiventodoallkindsoflabor.Sotheyhadnoliberty,politicalrightsandaccesstoeducation.MarkTwainreflectedtheblacks’livingofthenAmericainhisfamousnovelsTheAdventureofTomSawyerandTheAdventureofHuckleberryFinn.Thesongwadeinthewaterreflectsthesorrowandsufferofblackpeople.Theword“wade”metaphorsblackpeople’sstrugglingunderexploitation.“Lincolncontributedtotheabolishmentoftheslavery,buthiseffortsdidnotbringtrueequalitytoblackpeople.DeclarationIndependencestressedontheequalityofallcitizens,whilenotgrantingblackslavesrights.FromthestartofthehistoryofAmerica,blackpeoplewereputinalowerstatusthananyotherracesandwentalongpathtoreachtheirfreedomandequality.”[7]
