摘要
《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》是美国杰出南方作家威廉·福克纳写的一篇短篇小说。
通过对这篇小说中女主人公爱米丽与家庭扭曲的关系、与城镇居民的冲突、对HomerBarron的爱和与黑奴关系的研究,分析出家庭的制约、美国旧南方老一辈的庇护、新一代的妥协以及新旧文化的冲突是爱米丽扭曲性格产生的必然原因,同时展现出美国南方的进步与变革给人们生活带来的影响和变化。

Abstract
ARoseforEmilyisashortstorybytheAmericanauthorWilliamFaulkner.ThroughtheanalysisofthedistortedrelationshipbetweenEmilyandherFamily,theconflictwithtownresidents,theloveforHomerBarron,andtherelationshipbetweenEmilyandtheNegro,itcanbeseenthattherestrictionoffamily,theshelterofoldgenerationinsouthAmerica,thecompromiseofnewgeneration,andtheconflictoftheoldandnewculturearethenecessarycausesofEmily'sdistortedcharacter.AndthispaperalsopresentstheinfluenceandchangeswhichtherevolutionbroughtintothepeopleinSouthAmerica.

Introduction
Therearefourchaptersinthispaper.ThefirstchapterpresentsthedistortedrelationshipbetweenEmilyandherfamily.Herfamilydidnotlikeher.Itwastheinfluencethatherfatherleftonherremainedthroughouttherestofherlife.Thesecondchapterstatestheconflictwithtownresidents.Emilyneededrespectandthefeelingofsecurity,butnobodycaredabouther.Emilyconfrontedwiththeconflictsbetweenindividualandsociety,traditionandreality.ThethirdchapterpresentstheloveforHomerBarron.Thelovewasatragedy.Thestrongfeelingofpossessionandherunhealthycharactercauseshertragedy.TheforthchapteranalysestherelationshipbetweenEmilyandtheNegro.Asaservant,helookedafterEmilyasgoodaspossible.
WilliamFaulkner,anoutstandingsouthernwriteroftheU.S.A.,wasaregionalist,spendingmostofhistimeinasmallregion—DeepSouth.HewasconsideredbymanytobethegreatestwriteroffictionthattheUnitedStateshasyetproduced.UsingthedecayandcorruptionoftheSouthaftertheAmericanCivilWarasabackground,Faulknerportrayedthetragedythatoccurswhenthetraditionalvaluesofasocietydisintegrate.HeinventedacountyYoknapatawpha;thecapitalisJefferson,inhisimagination.Mostofhisstoriestookplaceinthisimaginaryplace.“ARoseforEmily”isoneofthem.
WilliamFaulknerwasthemostfamousofallcontemporarywritersoftheAmericanSouth,whoisremarkedin“WritersinCrisis”as“notmerelyrepresentsbutwastheDeepSouthasnootherAmericannovelistmayquitechimetobe”.Hereceivedthe1950NobelPrizeforLiterature,WilliamFaulkner'sreputationandinfluencehadspreadtoeverypartoftheworld.
Hehasfewcharactersthathavenormalsense,andMissEmily,themaincharacteroftheshortstory,isatypicalonewhoresemblesalmostalltheaspectsofWilliamFaulkner'swritingstyle.

TheGriersonfamilywasabigfamilyofgreatwealthwithawellpronouncedrichlineage.MissEmilyGriersonwasthesocialiteofhertown.Naturallywiththisstatustherewasacertainreputationshehastowithhold.Shenotonlyrepresentedherfamilynamebutinasensethepeopleofhertown.Becauseshewassuchadominantfigurethetownspeoplehaveputheronapedestalandwereveryjudgmentalofheractions.
1.1EmilyandHerFather
Inthepatriarchalsociety,thewomanistheman'svassal,theycanonlyfollowthepatriarchy.[1]Inthestory,wecanseeclearlythatEmily'sfatherforherlifelongeffects.ForEmilyandhisfather,thetownpeoplehavesuchapicture:

1.1.1EmilywithAliveFather
HisfatherwasaliveEmilybyoverbearingfatherdeniedasahumansubject,justbematerializedasfatherfamilyprivateproperty.Whilehisfatherwasherasherprotector.Shebecametheonlypillarofemotion.Shebecameanosoul,nodesire,nopersonality"shadowfigure".[2]
DuringthetimeinwhichherfatherwasaliveEmilywasseenasafiguretobeadmiredbutnevertouched.Hewasinhislifetimepreventedanytownyouthfrommarryingherdaughter,“fortheyoungmenwerenotfromdistinguishedfamilylikeGrierson.Asthetownpeoplecommented,theGriersonheldthemalittletoohighforwhatreallywere.NoneoftheyoungmenwerequitegoodenoughtoMissEmilysosuch”.Fromthecontextwecanplainlyseethathewasaveryoverbearingmanthatdidn'tallowhertoseemenforanyreasonatall.Thedeceasedfatherusedtoforceawayalltheyoungmenthatwereinlovewithher.Emilywasreveredasagoddessinthetownspeople'seyes.Atthatsociety,fatherwastheleader.
1.1.2EmilywithDeadFather
Afterthedeathofhisfather.Emilyhadbeenlivinginherdictatorialfathershadow.Sherefusedtoreleasehisbodytobeburiedbecause,inherownmind,shebelievedthathewasactuallynotdeceased.Thedayafterherfather'sdeath,theladiesoftheneighborhoodcametotheGriersonhometoconsoleEmily.She,however,meetthematthedoor,dressedasusualandwithnotraceofgriefonherface.Emily'sfatherhasalwaysbeenthereforher,evenwhenshedidnotwanthimtobe.Therefore,shecouldn’tacceptthefactthathewasnowgoneandshewasalone.Afterrecoveringfromherfather'sdeath,Emilystilldidsnotletgoofhimcompletely.Evenafterhispassing,shekeptacrayonportraitofhimtowatchoverherthroughtheyears.
DuetothepressurethatEmily'sfatherputonher,Emily'smindand
actionsbecameweird,distortedandevensomehowself-enclosed.Emily'sfatheristhemostimportantpersonwholedEmily'sbehavior.Emily'sfatherwasapowermaninthefamily.Hewasuncaring,abusive,andarrogant.
1.2TwoFemaleCousins
Thevisitoftwocousinseitherinterfereswithhermarriage,orconductthefuneralforher.Neitherofthemisjoyfulthing.Theydidnotloveherbutwantedtocontrolher.
Fromanotheraspect,hertwocousinsshowmoredemeanoroftheGrierson,representingtheoldfamiliesandthesousesociety,whichiscold,philistine,andilliberal.Afterreceivingthelettersfromtheclergyman,theytriedtopersuadehernottomarrywithHomer.Assomewomeninthetown,whattheycaremostisthesocalleddecency,butnottheEmily'strulyhappiness.
TherelationshipbetweenEmilyandhercousinsisindifferenceandtheyhavelittleaffection.Asthecousins,theyarethewitnessofEmily'stragedy;meanwhile,theyareprotagonistoftheirowntragedies.
ChapterIITheConflictwithTownResidents
Thepeopleofthetownwerealsocharactersinthestory,thoughtheyweren'tmentionedtoooften.Thesepeoplebroughtthestorytolife.Itgaveitrealnessandhelpedthereadertoreactwiththetown.
Inthestory,thetownspeople'spointsofviewsonEmilyactuallyreflectthesociety'svalueatthatmomenttosomeextent.Althoughthetownspeopledon'thavedirectcontactwithEmily,theirviewsonherandherfamilygreatlyaffectherlife.Theirpraisesandadmirationinfluenceherfathertokeephershelteredlongerthansheactuallyneedstobe.
2.1PayingTaxes
Thestorybeginsinsectiononewiththenarrator'srecollectionsofEmily'sfuneral.HereminiscesthatitisEmily'sfather'sdeaththatpromptsColonelSartoristoremithertaxes‘‘intoperpetuity''.ThisleadstothestoryofthealdermenattemptingtocollecttaxesfromEmily.ThefirstincidenthedescribestakesplaceapproximatelyadecadebeforeEmily'sdeath.AnewgenerationofpoliticianstakesoverJefferson'sgovernment.TheyareunmovedbyColonelSartoris'sgrandgestureonEmily'sbehalf,andtheyattempttocollecttaxesfromher.Sheignorestheirnoticesandletters.Finally,theBoardofAldermensendsadeputationtodiscussthesituationwithher.ThemenareledintoadecrepitparlorbyEmily'sblackman-servant,Tobe.Afterthespokesmanawkwardlyexplainsthereasonfortheirvisit,EmilyrepeatedlyinsiststhatshehasnotaxesinJeffersonandtellsthementoseeColonelSartoris.
Inthisconflict,theauthorrevelsEmilyclingtotheoldorderandresistnewthings.Actually,thisisthecompareofthetwogenerationsofthepeople.Itreflectstheconcernsofolderpeoplearecompassionateandthoughtful,whilethene
