7、four chapters in this paper. The first chapter presents the distorted relationship between Emily and her family. Her family did not like her. It was the influence that her father left on her remained throughout the rest of her life. The second chapter states the conflict with town residents. Emily n

8、eeded respect and the feeling of security, but nobody cared about her. Emily confronted with the conflicts between individual and society, tradition and reality. The third chapter presents the love for Homer Barron. The love was a tragedy. The strong feeling of possession and her unhealthy character

9、 causes her tragedy. The forth chapter analyses the relationship between Emily and the Negro. As a servant, he looked after Emily as good as possible.William Faulkner, an outstanding southern writer of the U.S.A., was a regionalist, spending most of his time in a small region Deep South. He was cons

10、idered by many to be the greatest writer of fiction that the United States has yet produced. Using the decay and corruption of the South after the American Civil War as a background, Faulkner portrayed the tragedy that occurs when the traditional values of a society disintegrate. He invented a count

11、y Yoknapatawpha; the capital is Jefferson, in his imagination. Most of his stories took place in this imaginary place. “A Rose for Emily” is one of them.William Faulkner was the most famous of all contemporary writers of the American South, who is remarked in “Writers in Crisis” as “not merely repre

12、sents but was the Deep South as no other American novelist may quite chime to be”. He received the 1950 Nobel Prize for Literature, William Faulkners reputation and influence had spread to every part of the world.He has few characters that have normal sense, and Miss Emily, the main character of the

13、 short story, is a typical one who resembles almost all the aspects of William Faulkners writing style.Chapter I The Distorted Relationship between Emily and Her FamilyThe Grierson family was a big family of great wealth with a well pronounced rich lineage. Miss Emily Grierson was the socialite of h

14、er town. Naturally with this status there was a certain reputation she has to withhold. She not only represented her family name but in a sense the people of her town. Because she was such a dominant figure the townspeople have put her on a pedestal and were very judgmental of her actions.1.1 Emily

15、and Her FatherIn the patriarchal society, the woman is the mans vassal, they can only follow the patriarchy.1In the story,we can see clearly that Emilys father for her lifelong effects. For Emily and his father, the town people have such a picture: for a long time, we put the family has been seen as

16、 a tableau: Slim, dressed in white standing behind miss Emily, her father spread her legs silhouette in the foreground, holding a whip, a backward Qianmen to block them both.1.1.1 Emily with Alive FatherHis father was alive Emily by overbearing father denied as a human subject, just be materialized

She became a no soul, no desire, no personality shadow figure.2During the time in which her father was alive Emily was seen as a figure to be admired but never touched. He was in his

18、lifetime prevented any town youth from marrying her daughter, “for the young men were not from distinguished family like Grierson. As the town people commented, the Grierson held them a little too high for what really were. None of the young men were quite good enough to Miss Emily so such”. From th

19、e context we can plainly see that he was a very overbearing man that didnt allow her to see men for any reason at all. The deceased father used to force away all the young men that were in love with her. Emily was revered as a goddess in the townspeoples eyes. At that society, father was the leader.

20、1.1.2Emily with Dead FatherAfter the death of his father. Emily had been living in her dictatorial father shadow. She refused to release his body to be buried because, in her own mind, she believed that he was actually not deceased. The day after her fathers death, the ladies of the neighborhood cam

21、e to the Grierson home to console Emily. She, however, meet them at the door, dressed as usual and with no trace of grief on her face. Emilys father has always been there for her, even when she did not want him to be. Therefore, she couldnt accept the fact that he was now gone and she was alone. Aft

22、er recovering from her fathers death, Emily still dids not let go of him completely. Even after his passing, she kept a crayon portrait of him to watch over her through the years.Due to the pressure that Emilys father put on her, Emilys mind and actions became weird, distorted and even somehow self-

23、enclosed. Emilys father is the most important person who led Emilys behavior. Emilys father was a power man in the family. He was uncaring, abusive, and arrogant.1.2 Two Female CousinsThe visit of two cousins either interferes with her marriage, or conduct the funeral for her. Neither of them is joy

24、ful thing. They did not love her but wanted to control her.From another aspect, her two cousins show more demeanor of the Grierson, representing the old families and the souse society, which is cold, philistine, and illiberal. After receiving the letters from the clergyman, they tried to persuade he

25、r not to marry with Homer. As some women in the town, what they care most is the so called decency, but not the Emilys truly happiness.The relationship between Emily and her cousins is indifference and they have little affection. As the cousins, they are the witness of Emilys tragedy; meanwhile, the

26、y are protagonist of their own tragedies.Chapter II The Conflict with Town ResidentsThe people of the town were also characters in the story, though they werent mentioned too often. These people brought the story to life. It gave it realness and helped the reader to react with the town.In the story,

27、 the townspeoples points of views on Emily actually reflect the societys value at that moment to some extent. Although the townspeople dont have direct contact with Emily, their views on her and her family greatly affect her life. Their praises and admiration influence her father to keep her shelter

28、ed longer than she actually needs to be.2.1 Paying TaxesThe story begins in section one with the narrators recollections of Emilys funeral. He reminisces that it is Emilys fathers death that prompts Colonel Sartoris to remit her taxes into perpetuity. This leads to the story of the aldermen attempti

29、ng to collect taxes from Emily. The first incident he describes takes place approximately a decade before Emilys death. A new generation of politicians takes over Jeffersons government. They are unmoved by Colonel Sartoriss grand gesture on Emilys behalf, and they attempt to collect taxes from her.

30、She ignores their notices and letters. Finally, the Board of Aldermen sends a deputation to discuss the situation with her. The men are led into a decrepit parlor by Emilys black man-servant, Tobe. After the spokesman awkwardly explains the reason for their visit, Emily repeatedly insists that she h

31、as no taxes in Jefferson and tells the men to see Colonel Sartoris.In this conflict, the author revels Emily cling to the old order and resist new things.Actually, this is the compare of the two generations of the people. It reflects the concerns of older people are compassionate and thoughtful, while the ne
