StuartManleyandhiswife,Mary,runasecond-handbookshopcalledBarterBooksinAlnwick,Northumberland.In2000,theyboughtaboxofoldbooks.WhenStuartgotthembacktotheshop,hediscoveredaposteratthebottomofthebox.Theposterread“KeepCalmandCarryOn”.NeitherStuartnorMaryknewanythingaboutthehistoryoftheposter,buttheylikeditsomuchthattheydecidedtohangtheposterintheirbookshop.

AtthestartofWorldWarII,theBritishgovernmentdesignedthreepostersandtheKeepCalmposterwasoneofthem.Twoofthethreeposterswerereleased(展示)inpublicinordertoencouragetheBritishpeople.Althoughnearly2.5millioncopiesoftheKeepCalmposterhadbeenprinted,theBritishgovernmentdecidednottoreleasethem.In1940,mostofthecopieswererecycledintootherpaperproducts.Onlyafewwereleft.

TheposterstarteditssecondlifewhenManley’sposterbeganattractingtheattentionofcustomersinhisshop.Heprintedcopiesofthepostertosell.Soonothercompaniesbegantosellproductswiththeslogan(标语).Itappearedoneverythingfrommugstoshoppingbags.
