Bethuneappearedtobethestrengthofthebusiness.Attheturnofthe20thcentury,thecityofBuffalowasrapidlyexpandingtomeetthedemandsofgrowingindustry.ThefirmreceivedtaskstobuildhundredsofstructuresthroughoutwesternNewYork.Thefirmdesignedlotsofschools,apartmentbuildings,departmentstores,churchesandfactories.

Bethunebelievedthatbeinganarchitectmeantbeinganartist,ascientistandabusinessperson.Shemadeapointofadvocatingforwomenintheprofession.ShebecameamemberoftheWesternAssociationofArchitects(WAA)in1885.In1888,shewasthefirstwomantojointheAmericanInstituteofArchitects(AIA).Besides,Bethunetookafirmstandonequaltreatmentforwomenarchitects.Sheinsistedonequalpayforequalwork.

Bethuneleftalmostnopapersorletters,andfewpeoplerecognizehernametoday.Butherlegacyremainsinthefootholdsheestablishedforwomeninthefieldofarchitecture.Shestartedherownfirmandenjoyedasuccessfulcareer.
