thatismostlywellbelowsealevel.IftheWestAntarcticIceSheetdisappeared,

thewesternpartofthecontinentwouldbereducedtoasparseclusterofisland.

Whileiceandsnowareobviouslycentraltomanyenvironmentalexperiments,

othersfocusonthemysterious“dryvalley”ofAntarctica,valleysthatcontain

littleiceorsnoweveninthedepthsofwinter.Slashedthroughthemountains

ofsouthernVictorialand,thesevalleysonceheldenormousglaciersthatdescend

9,000feetfromthepolarplateautotheRossSea.Nowtheglaciersaregone,

perhapsacasualtyoftheglobalwarmingtrendduringthe10,000yearssince

theiceage.Eventhesnowthatfallsinthedryvalleysisblastedoutbyvicious

windsthatroardownfromthepolarplateautothesea.Leftbarearespectacular

gorges,rippledfieldsofsanddunes,clustersofboulders(大圆石)sculpturedinto
