Intheexperiment,50peoplewereblindfoldedand40wereallowedtoseetheirfood.Allweretoldnottoeatwithintwohoursoftheexperiment.Theywerethengiventhree95gbowlsofchocolateicecreamandinvitedtoeatfor15minutes.Theirbowlsweretakenawayandtheremainingice-creamweighed,whiletheparticipantswerequizzedonhowmuchtheythoughttheyhadeaten.

Onaveragethegroupwhocouldseeate116gwhiletheblindfoldedgroupsate105g.However,theblindfoldedgroupbelievedtheyhadeaten197gwhilecomparedwith159gforthenon-blindvolunteers.Theywerealsoaskedhowpleasanttheice-creamtastedandtheblindfoldedgroupratedlowerthanthosewhocouldsee.

“Theexperiencedpleasureofeatingwassignificantlylowerintheblindfoldedgroup.Notseeingthefoodmighthavedecreasedtheappetite.Sightplaysanimportantroleintheeatingexperienceandintheoveralldiningexperience.”

Previousstudieshaveshownthatthevisualinfluenceoffoodplaysalargepartinthetaste.Whilerestaurantsthatallowdinerstoeatinthedarkstatethatittriggersothersenses,infacteatingindarknessislikelytotastefarmilderthanusual.
