ThisweekinLibya,welostfourofourfellowAmericans.GlenDoherty,TyroneWoods,SeanSmith,andChrisStevenswereallkilledinanoutrageousattackonourdiplomaticpostinBenghazi.

ThesefourAmericansrepresentedtheverybestofourcountry.

GlenandTyronehadeachservedAmericaasNavySEALsformanyyears,beforecontinuingtheirserviceprovidingsecurityforourdiplomatsinLibya.Theydiedastheylivedtheirlives–defendingtheirfellowAmericans,andadvancingthevaluesthatallofusholddear.

Seanalsostartedhisserviceinuniform,intheAirForce.HethenspentyearsattheStateDepartment,onseveralcontinents,alwaysansweringhiscountry’scall.AndAmbassadorChrisStevensdiedaherointwocountries–hereintheUnitedStates,whereheinspiredthoseofuswhoknewhim;andinLibya,acountrythathehelpedtosave,whereheultimatelylaiddownhislife.

OnFriday,IwasabletotelltheirfamilieshowmuchtheAmericanpeopleappreciatedtheirservice.Withoutpeoplelikethem,Americacouldnotsustainthefreedomsweenjoy,thesecuritywedemand,andtheleadershipthattheentireworldcountson.

Aswemourntheirloss,wemustalsosendaclearandresolutemessagetotheworld:

thosewhoattackourpeoplewillfindnoescapefromjustice.Wewillnotwaverintheirpursuit.AndwewillneverallowanyonetoshaketheresolveoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica.

Thistragicattacktakesplaceatatimeofturmoilandprotestinmanydifferentcountries.IhavemadeitclearthattheUnitedStateshasaprofoundrespectforpeopleofallfaiths.Westandforreligiousfreedom.Andwerejectthedenigrationofanyreligion–includingIslam.

Yetthereisneveranyjustificationforviolence.Thereisnoreligionthatcondonesthetargetingofinnocentmenandwomen.ThereisnoexcuseforattacksonourEmbassiesandConsulates.AndsolongasIamCommander-in-Chief,theUnitedStateswillnevertolerateeffortstoharmourfellowAmericans.

Rightnow,wearedoingwhateverwecantoprotectAmericanswhoareservingabroad.Weareincontactwithgovernmentsaroundtheglobe,tostrengthenourcooperation,andunderscorethateverynationhasaresponsibilitytohelpusprotectourpeople.Wehavemovedforwardwithanefforttoseethatjusticeisdoneforthosewelost,andwewillnotrestuntilthatworkisdone.

Mostofall,wemustreaffirmthatwewillcarryontheworkofourfallenheroes.

Iknowtheimagesonourtelevisionsaredisturbing.Butletusneverforgetthatforeveryangrymob,therearemillionswhoyearnforthefreedom,anddignity,andhopethatourflagrepresents.ThatisthecauseofAmerica–theidealsthattookrootinourfounding;theopportunitythatdrewsomanytoourshores;andtheawesomeprogressthatwehavepromotedallacrosstheglobe.

WeareAmericans.Weknowthatourspiritcannotbebroken,andthefoundationofourleadershipcannotbeshaken.ThatisthelegacyofthefourAmericanswelost–menwhowillliveonintheheartsofthosetheyloved,andthestrengthofthecountrytheyserved.

Sowiththeirmemorytoguideus,wewillcarryforwardtheworkofmakingourcountrystronger,ourcitizenssafer,andtheworldabetterandmorehopefulplace.Thankyou.
