RosalindFranklinalwayslikedfacts.Shewaslogicalandprecise,andimpatientwiththingsthatwereotherwise.Shedecidedtobecomeascientistwhenshewas15.ShepassedtheexaminationforadmissiontoCambridgeUniversityin1938,anditsparkedafamilycrisis.Althoughherfamilywaswell-to-doandhadatraditionofpublicserviceandcharity,herfatherdisapprovedofuniversityeducationforwomen.Herefusedtopay.AnauntsteppedinandsaidFranklinshouldgotoschool,andshewouldpayforit.Franklin’smotheralsotookhersideuntilherfatherfinallygavein.

ShewasinvitedtoKing’sCollegeinLondontojoinateamofscientists.TheleaderoftheteamassignedhertoworkonDNAwithagraduatestudent.Franklin’sassumption（设想）wasthatitwasherownproject.Thelaboratory’ssecond-in-command,MauriceWilkins,wasonvacationatthetime,andwhenhereturned,theirrelationshipwaspuzzling.Heassumedshewastoassisthiswork;sheassumedshe’dbetheonlyoneworkingonDNA.Theyhadpowerfulpersonalitydifferencesaswell:

ThetwoscientistsdidinfactusewhattheysawinPhoto51asthebasisfortheirfamousmodelofDNA,whichtheypublishedonMarch7,1953,andforwhichtheyreceivedaNobelPrizein1962.CrickandWatsonwerealsoabletotakemostofthecreditforthefinding:

theyincludedafootnoteacknowledgingthattheywere“stimulated（刺激、鼓励）byageneralknowledge”ofFranklin’sandWilkin’sunpublishedcontribution,whenmuchoftheirworkwasrootedinFranklin’sphotoandfindings.Franklindidn’tknowthatthesemenbasedtheirarticle
