“Inthe1860stherewerethousandsofManxpeoplewhocouldn'tspeakEnglish,”saysStowell.“ButonlyacenturylateritwasconsideredtobesobackwardtospeakthelanguagethattherewerestoriesofManxspeakersgettingstonesthrownattheminthetowns.Ilearntitmyselffromoneofthelastsurvivingnativespeakersbackinthe1950s.”
Recessioninthemid⁃19thcenturyforcedmanyManxpeopletoleavetheislandtoseekworkinEngland.Andparentswerenotwillingtopassthelanguagedownthroughthegenerations,withmanypeoplebelievingthattohaveManxasthefirstlanguagewouldaffectjobopportunitiesoverseas.
