ThebloodgroupsOandAarethetwomostcommonintheBritishpopulation:

some44percentaretypeOand42percentaretypeA.

Theleadauthor,DrEdwardNejat,ofthedepartmentofobstetrics（产科学，助产术）andgynaecology（妇科医学）attheAlbertEinsteinCollegeofMedicineinNewYork,saidhisfindingswerebasedonwomenhavingfertilitytreatmentattheYaleUniversityIVFprogrammeandtheMontefioreInstituteinNewYork.

HeispresentinghisfindingstomorrowattheannualAmericanSocietyforReproductiveMedicine（ASRM）conferenceinDenver.

Thestudyof560women,whoseaverageagewasjustunder35,foundthatthosewithbloodtypeOweremorelikelytohavehigherlevelsof"follicle（卵泡）stimulatinghormone"（FSH）thanthosewithtypeA.

FertilityexpertsregardahighFSHlevelasakeyindicatorofhavingaloweggcount.FSHisproducedbythebodytostimulatethefolliclesintheovariesthatproduceeggs.

Asawoman'sovariesrunoutofeggsinher30sand40s,productionthereforehastobesteppeduptoencouragemoreeggs.ThepresenceofhighlevelsofFSHindicateslowernumbersofeggs.

ThestudyfoundthatwomenwithbloodtypeOweretwiceaslikelytohaveanFSHlevelabove10–regardedasthethresholdbetweennormalandraisedlevels–asthoseinanyotherbloodgroup.

PeoplewithbloodgroupAcarrytheAantigen（抗原）,aproteinonthecellsurface,thatisabsentinpeoplewithOtype.

DrNejatsaid:

"ThosewithbloodtypeOweretwiceaslikelytohaveanFSHlevelover10thanthosewithbloodtypesotherthanO.WefoundthatwomenwiththeAbloodgroupgenewereprotectedfromthiseffect."
