ThisfilmisthefirstmoviestarringanddirectedbyWoodyAllen,whowouldgoontobecomeoneofthemostfamouscomicactorsinthehistoryofAmericancinema.Itisdoneintheformofadocumentary,andtellsthelifestoryofVirgilStockwell,apooranddesperateyoungmanwhoturnstoalifeofcrimebecausehecan’tseemtomakealivingdoinganythingelse.ThenarratortellsofVirgil’slifefromhisunhappychildhoodtohisridiculouslifeasabankrobber,oftenthroughtheuseofinterviewswithpeoplewhohaveknownhim.Thosepeopleincludeeveryonefromhisdecentbutashamedparents(soashamedofVirgil,infact,thattheyweardisguiseswhiletheyareinterviewed),tohispsychologistsandfellowinmatesinprison.
ForVirgil,thebestthingthathappensinhislifeiswhenhemeetsLouise,asweetandprettyyoungwomanwhoworksinalaundry.Virgilhadplayedcelloasaboy,andwhenhemeetsLouise,hetellsherthatheisaprofessionalclassicalmusicianinthecityphilharmonic.Eventually,ofcourse,LouisefindsoutthatVirgilissimplyacommoncriminalandbankrobber,butshestaysloyaltohim,evenafteranendlessseriesoffailedbankrobberiesinwhichVirgilalwaysendsupbackinprison,forevertryingjustonemoretimetoescape…
