ReasonsfortheexistenceoftheUN

Sincethedayofitsbirth,theUnitedNationshasbeenthesubjectofmuchdebate.Somepeopleattacktheorganizationbecausetheythinkitistoopowerful.Othersthinkthatitistooweak.WecanbetterunderstandthisdebateifwelearnmoreabouttheUNanditshistory.

TheUNwasstartedfortworeasons.First,whentheideawasborn,peopleallovertheworldweretiredofwar.TheyweretirednotjustofWorldWarⅡ,butofwaritself.Theyfeltthattheremustbepeacefulanswerstotheworld'sproblems.Theyfeltthatonlyaninternationalorganizationcouldkeepworldpeace.

Thesecondreasonwasthatmodernsciencehaddevelopednewbombsandairplanes.Theseweaponsmadeitalmostimpossibleforacountrytodefenditself.Nationalborderswerebeginningtolosetheirmeaning.Therewasalsoafeelingthatthiswasonlythebeginning.Sciencewoulddevelopevenmoredangerousweaponsinthefuture.Onlyaninternationalorganizationwouldbeabletocontrolmodernscience.

FoundersoftheUN

FranklinDelanoRoosevelt,whowasPresidentoftheUnitedStatesatthetime,believedthattheAlliesshouldplanforpeacebeforethewarended.OnDecember1,1943,Roosevelt,WinstonChurchillofGreatBritainandJosephStalinoftheformerSovietUnionagreedtostartanorganizationforworldpeace.Theyaskedallcountries,largeandsmall,tojointhem.

Duringthenextyearandahalf,theideaofsuchanorganizationwasdebatedinallthecapitalsoftheworld.Thencameabigdayinmodernhistory.OnApril11,1945,thefirstinternationalmeetingoftheUnitedNationstookplaceinSanFrancisco.

ThegoalofthemeetingwastowritetheUNCharter.Allofthefifty-onenationsatthemeetinghadtheirownideastoofferfortheCharter.Afteralongdebate,aCharterwasagreedupon.EverynationpresentvotedfortheCharter,noonevotedagainstit.

TheUNCharterisabeautifulpieceofwriting.InlanguageitexplainswhytheUNwasstarted.Thereasonsare:
