Soholdthemysteryofthedarkenergyinthebackofyourmind,asInowgoontotellyouthreekeythingsaboutstringtheory.
Firstoff,whatisit?
Wellit’sanapproachtorealizeEinstein’sdreamofaunifiedtheoryofphysics,asingleoverarchingframeworkthatwouldbeabletodescribealltheforcesatworkintheuniverse.
Andthecentralideaofstringtheoryisquitestraightforward.
Itsaysthatifyouexamineanypieceofmatterevermorefinely,atfirstyou’llfindmoleculesandthenyou’llfindatomsandsubatomicparticles.
Butthetheorysaysthatifyoucouldprobesmaller,muchsmallerthanwecanwithexistingtechnology,you’dfindsomethingelseinsidetheseparticles--alittletinyvibratingfilamentofenergy,alittletinyvibratingstring.
Andjustlikethestringsonaviolin,theycanvibrateindifferentpatternsproducingdifferentmusicalnotes.
Theselittlefundamentalstrings,whentheyvibrateindifferentpatterns,theyproducedifferentkindsofparticles--soelectrons,quarks,neutrinos,photons,allotherparticleswouldbeunitedintoasingleframework,astheywouldallarisefromvibratingstrings.
It’sacompellingpicture,akindofcosmicsymphony,wherealltherichnessthatweseeintheworldaroundusemergesfromthemusic,thattheselittle,tinystringscanplay.
Butthere’scosttothiselegantunification,becauseyearsofresearchhaveshownthatthemathofstringtheorydoesn’tquitework.
Ithasinternalinconsistencies,unlessweallowforsomethingwhollyunfamiliarextradimensionsofspace.
Thatis,weallknowabouttheusualthreedimensionsofspace.
Andyoucanthinkaboutthoseasheight,widthanddepth.
Butstringtheorysaysthat,onfantasticallysmallscales,thereareadditionaldimensionscrumpledtoatinysizesosmallthatwehavenotdetectedthem.
Buteventhoughthedimensionsarehidden,theywouldhaveanimpactonthingsthatwecanobserve,becausetheshapeoftheextradimensionsconstrainshowthestringscanvibrate.
Andinstringtheory,vibrationdetermineseverything.
Soparticlemasses,thestrengthsofforces,andmostimportantly,theamountofdarkenergywouldbedeterminedbytheshapeoftheextradimensions.
Soifweknewtheshapeoftheextradimensions,weshouldbeabletocalculatethesefeatures,calculatetheamountofdarkenergy.
Thechallengeiswedon’tknowtheshapeoftheextradimensions.
Allwehaveisalistofcandidateshapesallowedbythemath.
Nowwhentheseideaswerefirstdeveloped,therewereonlyfivedifferentcandidateshapes,soyoucanimagineanalyzingthemone-by-onetodetermineifanyyieldthephysicalfeaturesweobserve.
Butovertimethelistgrew,asresearchersfoundothercandidateshapes.
Fromfive,thenumbergrewintothehundredsandthenthethousands--alarge,butstillmanageable,collectiontoanalyze,sinceafterall,graduatestudentsneedsomethingtodo.
Butthenthelistcontinuedtogrowintothemillionsandthebillionsuntiltoday.
So,whattodo?
Wellsomeresearcherslostheart,concludingthatwassomanycandidateshapesfortheextradimensions,eachgivingrisetodifferentphysicalfeatures,stringtheorywouldnevermakedefinitive,testablepredictions.
Butothersturnedthisissueonitshead,takingustothepossibilityofamultiverse.
Here’stheidea.
Maybeeachoftheseshapesisonanequalfootingwitheveryother.
Eachisasrealaseveryother,inthesense,thattherearemanyuniverses,eachwithadifferentshape,fortheextradimensions.
Andthisradicalproposalhasaprofoundimpactonthismystery:
theamountofdarkenergyrevealedbytheNobelPrize-winningresults.
Becauseyousee,ifthereareotheruniverses,andifthoseuniverseseachhave,say,adifferentshapefortheextradimensions,thenthephysicalfeaturesofeachuniversewillbedifferent,andinparticular,theamountofdarkenergyineachuniversewillbedifferent.
Whichmeansthatthemystery,ofexplainingtheamountofdarkenergywe’venowmeasuredwouldtakeonawhollydifferentcharacter。
Inthiscontext,thelawsofphysicscan’texplainonenumberforthedarkenergy,becausethereisn’tjustonenumber,therearemanynumbers.
Whichmeans,wehavebeenaskingthewrongquestion.
It’sthattherightquestiontoaskis,whydowehumansfindourselvesinauniversewithaparticularamountofdarkenergywe’vemeasured,insteadofanyoftheotherpossibilitiesthatareoutthere?
Andthat’saquestiononwhichwecanmakeheadway.
Becausethoseuniversesthathavemuchmoredarkenergythanours,whenevermattertriestoclumpintogalaxies,therepulsivepushofthedarkenergyissostrong,thatisblowstheclumpapartandgalaxiesdon’from.
Andinthoseuniversesthathavemuchlessdarkenergy,welltehycollapsebackonthemselvessoquickly,that,again,galaxiesdon’tform.
Andwithoutgalaxies,therearenostars,noplanets,andnochanceforourformoflifetoexistinthoseotheruniverses.
Sowefindourselvesinauniversewiththeparticularamountofdarkenergywe’vemeasured,simplybecauseouruniversehasconditionshospitabletoourformoflife.
Andthatwouldbethat.
Mysterysolved,multiversefound.
Nowsomefindthisexplanationunsatisfying.
we'reusedtophysicsgivingusdefinitiveexplanationsforthefeaturesweobserve.
Butthepointis,ifthefeatureyou’reobservingcananddoestakeonawidevarietyofdifferentvaluesacrossthewiderlandscapeofreality,thenthinkingoneexplanationforaparticularvalueissimplymisguided.
AnearlyexamplecomesfromthegreatastronomerJohannesKepler,whowasobsessedwithunderstandingadifferentnumber--whytheSunis93millionmilesawayfromtheEarth.
Andheworkedfordecadestryingtoexplainthisnumber,butheneversucceeded,andweknowwhy.
Keplerwasaskingthewrongquestion.
Wenowknowthattherearemanyplanetsatawidevarietyofdifferentdistancesfromtheirhoststars.
Sohopingthatthelawsofphysicswillexplainoneparticularnumber,93millionmiles,wellthatissimplywrongheaded.
Insteadtherightquestiontoaskis,whydowehumansfindourselvesonaplanetatthisparticulardistance,insteadofanyoftheotherpossibilities?
Andagain,that’saquestionwecananswer.
ThoseplanetswhicharemuchclosertoastarliketheSunwouldbesohot,thatourformoflifewouldn’texist.
Andthoseplanetsthataremuchfartherawayfromthestar,wellthey’resocold,that,again,ourformoflifewouldnottakehold.
Sowefindourselvesonaplanetatthisparticulardistancesimplybecauseityieldsconditionsvitaltoourformoflife.
Andwhenitcomestoplanetsandtheirdistances,thisclearlyistherightkindofreasoning.
Thepointis,whenitcomestouniversesandthedarkenergythattheycontain,itmayalsobetherightkindofreasoning.
Onekeydifference,ofcourse,isweknowthatthereareotherplanetsoutthere,butsofarI’veonlyspeculatedonthepossibilitythattheremightbeotheruniverses.
Sotopullitalltogether,weneedamechanismthatcanactuallygenerateotheruniverses.
Andthattakesmetomyfinalpart,partthree.
Cosmicexplosion
