Passage1
AdaptingtotheNewWorld
Originally,IwasborninSouthKoreaandlivedthereallmylifeuntilImarriedandmovedtoAmerica.WhilelivinginAmericaforfiveyearsnow,Ihavetriedtoadapttotherapidpaceofchangeinmylife.AlthoughIfeltworriedatfirst,IdoubtedthatIwouldfindmanydifferencesbetweenourtwocountries.Afterall,wearemuchalikeeventhoughwespeakdifferentlanguages,andhavedifferenttraditionsandcultures.Peopleinbothcountrieswearbluejeans,lovechildren,andseekfreedom.Despitethesesimilarities,Ifounditdifficulttoadjust,forsomuchwasalientome.
Mostdifficultformewaslearninganewlanguage.IdiscoveredthatAmericanEnglishcombinestheinfluenceofmanyotherlanguages,mostlyEuropeanbutmanyofthemglobal.ThelanguageisbasicallyEnglish,ofcourse,fortheEnglish,whocameoverontheMayflower,settledhereearly,andinthelargestnumbers.Ontheotherhand,theKoreanlanguagewasheavilyinfluencedbyChineseuntilabout400yearsago.ForKoreanlearnersofEnglish,thedifferentusesofnounandverbarehardtograsp,atfirst.Forexample,anEnglishspeakerwouldaskaquestionbyreversingthenounandverb,andoftenseparatingtheverb,asin“Whereareyougoing?
”However,inKorean,onewouldask,“Yougowhere?

Next,IneededtoadjusttoAmericanfood,whichisrelativelymild,withtheexceptionofCajundishes.Generally,Koreanfoodisveryspicy,likeKimchi,whichcoversmanytypesofpickledcabbageandothervegetables;Koreanscannotlivewithoutit,andoftenmaketheirownfromoldfamilyrecipes.Inaddition,Koreansenjoylowfat,mostlyvegetariandiets.TheAmericandiet,ontheotherhand,consistsofhigh-fat,verysaltyitems,likethefastfoodandinstantTVdinnerswhicharesopopular.Thesefoodsmayaccountforthehighratesofheartattacksandstrokes,cholesterol-cloggedveins,andfatnessamongAmericans.
Finally,KoreansandAmericanstreatmarriageverydifferently.Eventhoughwehaveenteredthetwenty-firstcentury,manyKoreanmarriagesarearrangedbymatchmakershiredbyparents.Or,parentsofmarriageablechildrenwillgettogetherandarrangetheirmarriages.Ofcourse,somemarriagescomeaboutthroughdatingjustasinAmerica—youngpeoplemeet,fallinlove,anddecidetomarry.Yet,despiteorbecauseofarrangedmarriages,theKoreandivorcerateisverylowcomparedwithAmericandivorces.ThismaybeduelargelytothestrongfamilybondsinKorea.
Ontheotherhand,youngpeopleinAmericaareallowedthegreatestfreedominchoosingtheirpartners;theybasemarriagesalmostentirelyonlove,neverthroughmatchmakers.Andaverystrongtrend,nowadays,isfortwopersonstolivetogetherforawhilebeforegettingmarried,thoughmanyneverformallymarry.
Despitethesedifferencesbetweenourcultures,I’verealizedthatKoreansandAmericanshavemuchincommon.Wetendtoseekfreedom,sharethesameexcitementatanewbirth,andwanttomakegoodfriends.Also,weplaceahighvalueonhardwork,oftenspendinglonghoursatourownbusinessesinordertosendourchildrentogoodcolleges;wewanttogivethemopportunitiesearliergenerationscouldonlydreamof.Ifwecanlearntoacceptculturaldifferencesasuniquevalues,theworldmaybemorepeaceful.Weneedtoputasideouroftenunfoundedattitudesofsuperiorityandprejudiceagainstothercultures.
