Originally,IwasborninSouthKoreaandlivedthereallmylifeuntilImarriedandmovedtoAmerica.WhilelivinginAmericaforfiveyearsnow,Ihavetriedtoadapttotherapidpaceofchangeinmylife.AlthoughIfeltworriedatfirst,IdoubtedthatIwouldfindmanydifferencesbetweenourtwocountries.Afterall,wearemuchalikeeventhoughwespeakdifferentlanguages,andhavedifferenttraditionsandcultures.Peopleinbothcountrieswearbluejeans,lovechildren,andseekfreedom.Despitethesesimilarities,Ifounditdifficulttoadjust,forsomuchwasalientome.

Mostdifficultformewaslearninganewlanguage.IdiscoveredthatAmericanEnglishcombinestheinfluenceofmanyotherlanguages,mostlyEuropeanbutmanyofthemglobal.ThelanguageisbasicallyEnglish,ofcourse,fortheEnglish,whocameoverontheMayflower,settledhereearly,andinthelargestnumbers.Ontheotherhand,theKoreanlanguagewasheavilyinfluencedbyChineseuntilabout400yearsago.ForKoreanlearnersofEnglish,thedifferentusesofnounandverbarehardtograsp,atfirst.Forexample,anEnglishspeakerwouldaskaquestionbyreversingthenounandverb,andoftenseparatingtheverb,asin“Whereareyougoing?

”However,inKorean,onewouldask,“Yougowhere?

”Learninganewlanguagewashardforme,butanessentialpartofbeginninglifeinthiswondrousland.

Next,IneededtoadjusttoAmericanfood,whichisrelativelymild,withtheexceptionofCajundishes.Generally,Koreanfoodisveryspicy,likeKimchi,whichcoversmanytypesofpickledcabbageandothervegetables;Koreanscannotlivewithoutit,andoftenmaketheirownfromoldfamilyrecipes.Inaddition,Koreansenjoylowfat,mostlyvegetariandiets.TheAmericandiet,ontheotherhand,consistsofhigh-fat,verysaltyitems,likethefastfoodandinstantTVdinnerswhicharesopopular.Thesefoodsmayaccountforthehighratesofheartattacksandstrokes,cholesterol-cloggedveins,andfatnessamongAmericans.

Finally,KoreansandAmericanstreatmarriageverydifferently.Eventhoughwehaveenteredthetwenty-firstcentury,manyKoreanmarriagesarearrangedbymatchmakershiredbyparents.Or,parentsofmarriageablechildrenwillgettogetherandarrangetheirmarriages.Ofcourse,somemarriagescomeaboutthroughdatingjustasinAmerica—youngpeoplemeet,fallinlove,anddecidetomarry.Yet,despiteorbecauseofarrangedmarriages,theKoreandivorcerateisverylowcomparedwithAmericandivorces.ThismaybeduelargelytothestrongfamilybondsinKorea.

Ontheotherhand,youngpeopleinAmericaareallowedthegreatestfreedominchoosingtheirpartners;theybasemarriagesalmostentirelyonlove,neverthroughmatchmakers.Andaverystrongtrend,nowadays,isfortwopersonstolivetogetherforawhilebeforegettingmarried,thoughmanyneverformallymarry.

Despitethesedifferencesbetweenourcultures,I’verealizedthatKoreansandAmericanshavemuchincommon.Wetendtoseekfreedom,sharethesameexcitementatanewbirth,andwanttomakegoodfriends.Also,weplaceahighvalueonhardwork,oftenspendinglonghoursatourownbusinessesinordertosendourchildrentogoodcolleges;wewanttogivethemopportunitiesearliergenerationscouldonlydreamof.Ifwecanlearntoacceptculturaldifferencesasuniquevalues,theworldmaybemorepeaceful.Weneedtoputasideouroftenunfoundedattitudesofsuperiorityandprejudiceagainstothercultures.

SevenStepstoaMoreSatisfyingJob

Manypeopletodayfindthemselvesinunhappyworksituations.Infact,oneinfourworkersisdissatisfiedwiththeircurrentjob,accordingtotherecent“Plansfor2004”survey.Theircareerpathmaybefinanciallyrewarding,butitdoesn’tmeettheiremotional,socialorcreativeneeds.They’reunhappy,andhavenoideawhattodoaboutit,exceptmovetoanotherjob.

Breakingthecycleofdoingwhatyouhavealwaysdoneisoneofthemostdifficulttasksforjobseekers.Manyfinditdifficulttosteerawayfromacareerpathormakeachange,evenifitdoesn’tfeelright.Millerurgesjobseekerstoopentheirmindstootherpossibilitiesbeyondwhattheyarecurrentlydoing.

Step2:

Commitmenttobeingwhoyouare,notwhoorwhatsomeonewantsyoutobe.

Lookatthegiftsandtalentsyouhaveanddopursuethosethingsthatyoulovemost.Ifyoulovethesocialaspectsofyourjob,butarestuckinsideanofficeor“chainedtoyourdesk”mostofthetime,vow(发誓)tofollowyourinstinctandinvestigatealternativecareersandworkthatallowyoumoretimetointeractwithothers.Dawnworkedasamanagerforalargeretailclothingstoreforseveralyears.Thoughshehadadvancedwithinthecompany,shefeltfrustratedandlongedtobeinvolvedwithnatureandtheoutdoors.Shedecidedtogotoschoolnightsandweekendstopursuehertruepassionbyearninghermaster’sdegreeinforestry(林学).Shenowworksinthebiotechforestrydivisionofamajorpapercompany.

Step3:

Self-definition

Millersuggeststhatoncejobseekersknowwhotheyare,theyneedtoknowhowtosellthemselves.“Inthejobmarket,youareaproduct.Andjustlikeaproduct,youmostknowthefeaturesandbenefitsthatyouhavetoofferapotentialclient,oremployer.”Examinetheskillsandknowledgethatyouhaveandidentifyhowtheycanapplytoyourdesiredoccupation.Yourqualitieswillexhibittoemployerswhytheyshouldhireyouoverothercandidates.

Step4:

Attainalevelofself-honoring(肯定自我).

Self-honoringorself-lovemayseemlikeanoddstepforjobhunters,butbeingabletoacceptyourself,withoutjudgment,helpseliminateinsecuritiesandwillmakeyoumoreself-assured(有自信的).Byacceptingwhoyouare–allyouremotions,hopesanddreams,yourpersonality,andyouruniquewayofbeing–you’llshowmoreconfidencewhentalkingwithpotentialemployers.Thepowerofself-honoringcanhelptobreakallthefalsehoods(谎言)youweremadetobelieve–thosethatmadeyoufeelthatyouwerenotgoodenough,orstrongenough,orintelligentenoughtodowhatyoutrulydesire.

Vision(想像).

Millersuggeststhatjobseekersdevelopavisionthatinvolvesananswerto“WhatdoIreallywanttodo?

”Oneshouldcreateadozenofsentencesthatdescribeindetailhowtheyseetheirliferelatedtowork.Forinstance,thesecretarywholongstobeanactressdescribesalifethatallowshertoexpressherloveofShakespeareonstage.Arealestateagent,attractedtohiscurrentjobbecauseherlovesfixingupoldhomes,describesbuyingpropertiesthatneedalittletenderlovingcaretomakethemmoresaleable.

Step6:

Appropriaterisk.
