Abstract
Granularcompositionsaredisclosedforuseinpreparinghard,wateranderosion-resistant,shapessuchasfoundrymoldsandcores,thatareself-settingunderambientatmosphericconditionstoallowsuchshapestobestrippedfrompatternsonwhichtheyareformed,suchpatternstrippingbeingpossibleimmediatelyafterforminginthecaseoffoundrycoresandthelike,andwithincontrollablepatternstriptimesaslowas60secondsforfoundrymolds.Theshapesmaybeusedwithoutbakingand,inthecaseoffoundrymoldsandcores,arereadyforcastingmoltenmetalwithinaslittleasonehour.Moldsand/orcoresfreeoforganicmaterialscanbeformedwiththenovelcompositions,providingessentiallycarbon-freesurfacesatthemold-metalinterface,aswellasbeingfreeofotherdeleteriouselementssuchassulfur,phosphorusandboron,therebyavoidingalloycompositionalterationattheinterfaceduetomigrationduringcasting.Therefractorycompositionsoftheinventionincorporateuniquealuminosilicatehydrogelsofalkalimetalsasbinders,arecompatibleinusewithexistingindustrialfoundrymold/core-formingequipmentandprocedures,andareeminentlyfreeofenvironmental(toxicity)problemsinthefoundryatmosphere.
