Application-awareschedulingforVoIPinWirelessMeshNetworks

WirelessMeshNetworks(WMNs)areseenasameanstoprovidelastmileconnectionsinNextGenerationNetworks(NGNs).Becauseoftheirauto-configurationcapabilitiesandthelowdeploymentcostWMNsareconsideredtobeanefficientsolutionforthesupportofmultiplevoice,videoanddataservicesinNGNs.ThispaperlooksattheoptimalprovisionofresourcesinWMNsforVoiceoverIP(VoIP)traffic,whichhasstrictperformancerequirementsintermsofdelay,jitterandpacketloss.InWMNs,becauseofthechallengesintroducedbywirelessmulti-hoptransmissionsandlimitedresources,providingperformancequalityforVoIPcomparabletothevoicequalityinthetraditionalcircuit-switchednetworksisamajorchallenge.

ThispaperanalysesdifferentschedulingmechanismsforTDMA-basedaccesscontrolinmeshnetworksasspecifiedintheIEEE802.16-2004WiMAXstandard.TheperformanceoftheVoIPapplicationswhendifferentschedulingmechanismsaredeployedisanalysedonavarietyoftopologiesusingns-2simulationandmathematicalanalysis.Thepaperconcludesthaton-demandschedulingofVoIPtraffic–typicallydeployedin802.11-basedWMNs–isnotabletoprovidetherequiredVoIPqualityinrealisticmeshWiMAXnetworkscenariosandisthereforenotoptimalfromanetworkoperator’spointofview.Instead,itisshown,thatcontinuousschedulingismuchbettersuitedtoserveVoIPtraffic.ThepaperthenproposesanewVoIP-awareresourcecoordinationschemeandshows,throughsimulation,thatthenewschemeisscalableandprovidesgoodqualityforVoIPserviceinawiderangeofnetworkscenarios.Theresultsshowninthepaperprovethatthenewschemeisresilienttoincreasinghopcount,increasingnumberofsimultaneousVoIPsessionsandthebackgroundtrafficloadinthenetwork.ComparedtootherresourcecoordinationschemestheVoIP-awareschedulersignificantlyincreasesthenumberofsupportedcalls.

Deploymentofheterogeneouswirelessnetworksisspreadingthroughouttheworldasuserswanttobeconnectedanytime,anywhere,andanyhow.Meanwhile,theseusersareincreasinglyinterestedinmultimediaapplicationssuchasvideostreamingandVoiceoverIP(VoIP),whichrequirestrictQualityofService(QoS)support.Provisioningnetworkresourceswithsuchconstraintsisachallengingtask.Infact,consideringtheavailabilityofvariousaccesstechnologies(WiFi,WiMAX,orcellularnetworks),itisdifficultforanetworkoperatortofindreliablecriteriatoselectthebestnetworkthatensuresusersatisfactionwhilemaximizingnetworkutilization.DesigninganefficientRadioResourceManagement(RRM),inthistypeofenvironment,ismandatoryforsolvingsuchproblems.InordertoprovideabetterunderstandingofRRM’sdesign,thispaperpresentsadetailedinvestigationofkeychallengesthatconstituteanefficientRRMframework.Moreimportantly,anoverviewwithaclassificationofrecentsolutions,intermsofdecisionmaking,isprovidedalongwiththediscussion.

 

VirtualizationarchitectureusingtheID/LocatorsplitconceptforFutureWirelessNetworks(FWNs)  

FutureWirelessNetworks(FWNs)willbeaconvergenceofmanyfixedandmobilenetworkingtechnologiesincludingcellular,wirelessLANs,andtraditionalwirednetworks.Thisunitedubiquitousnetworkwillconsistofbillionsofnetworkabledeviceswithdifferentnetworkinginterfaces.Acommonnetworkingprotocolisrequiredtocommunicateamongthesedevicesandinterfaces;SystemArchitectureEvolution(SAE)documentsstatethatInternetProtocol(IP),world-widelyusedinthecurrentInternet,islikelytobecomethatcommonprotocol.However,traditionalIParchitecturehasfacedseveralknownchallenges,suchasmobility,multihoming,privacy,pathpreferenceselection,etc.,whichshouldberesolvedinFWNs.OneofthedifficultiesinthecurrentIParchitectureistheoverloadingofIPaddressesusedbothastheidentityandthelocationofIPdevices.Inthispaper,weproposeavirtualizationconceptfornetworkablecomponents,or(virtual)objects,whichgeneralizesallabstractcomponentstopotentiallybeusedinFWNs.Inaddition,wehaveexplicitlyseparatedthefunctionsofthevirtualobjectidentityfromthevirtualobjectlocation(usingtheID/locatorsplitconcept).Theend-to-endcommunicationisaconcatenationoftheinvolvedcomponents,calledachannel.Tohelpsupporttheownershipandpolicyenforcementfortrustedvs.untrustednetworks,asetof(virtual)networkablecomponentswiththesameinterest,calledarealm,isformedinamulti-tierstructure.Theindividualpolicycanbeenforcedforeachindividualgroupof(virtual)objectsand/orchannels.T
