Aphrasalverbisanidiomwhichconsistsofaverbfollowedbyapreposition,averbfollowedbyanadverb,oraverbfollowedbyanadverb,followedbyapreposition.Thephrasalverbsinthefollowingexamplesareprintedinboldtype.

ManyphrasalverbsareusedmoreoftenininformalEnglishthaninformalEnglish.Inmostcases,theideasexpressedbysuchphrasalverbsmayalsobeexpressedbyotherphraseswhicharemorelikelytobeusedinformalEnglish.

ItshouldbenotedthattheuseofmanyphrasalverbsvariesamongthedifferentdialectsofEnglish.Forinstance,inordertoexpresstheideaofcontactingsomeonebymeansofthetelephone,theexpressiontoringsomeoneupisfrequentlyusedinBritishEnglish;whereastheexpressiontocallsomeoneisfrequentlyusedinAmericanEnglish.
Becauseofdifferencesindialect,theformsoftheverbsandthemeaningsgivenmayvaryfromonedictionarytoanother.Inaddition,somephrasalverbshavemorethanonemeaning.ThemeaningsprovidedinthischapteraresamplesofmeaningswhichareusedinNorthAmericanEnglish.
1.Phrasalverbsconsistingofaverbfollowedbyapreposition
Somephrasalverbsconsistofaverbfollowedbyapreposition.Ashasbeenseeninpreviouschapters,itisverycommonforEnglishverbstobefollowedbyprepositions.However,inthecaseofaphrasalverb,theverbfollowedbytheprepositionformsanexpressionwithanidiomaticmeaning.
Forinstance,thephrasalverbtocomeacrossisanidiomaticexpressionwiththemeaningtofind.Similarly,thephrasalverbtofrownonisanidiomaticexpressionwiththemeaningtodisapproveof.

Theworkersfrownedonthepracticeofsmokingintheoffice.
ItshouldbenotedthatsomephrasalverbsconsistingofaverbfollowedbyaprepositioncanbeusedinthePassiveVoice.
