Thereareatleast10millionpeopleinChinawithseveremyopia,andtheyarelikelytogetpathological(病理性的)myopiainmiddleage.Pathologicalmyopiacan'tbetreatedwithglassesorsurgery,anditisoneofthebiggestfactorsthatleadtoblindness,XuXun,directoroftheophthalmology(眼科学)departmentatShanghaiGeneralHospital,pointedout.

ExpertsexplainthattwomajorfactorsleadtothehighrateofmyopiaamongChinesepeople.Oneishighacademicpressure,andtheotheroneisexcessiveuseofelectronicdevicesoveralongperiodoftime.Genetics,ontheotherhand,arenotthemainreason,asonly20percentofChinesepeoplehadmyopiainthe1960s.
