Atthestartofthetraining,Warewasstandingoutsidethecircleofstudents,againstthebackwall,withthat“goahead,impressme”lookonhisface.Butslowly,theinteractivegamesdrewhimin.Theicereallymeltedwhenthegroupsstartedbuildingalistofpositiveandnegativethingsthathadoccurredatschoolthatyear.T.J.hadsomedefinitethoughtsonthosesituations.TheotherstudentsinT.J.’sgroupwelcomedhiscomments.AllofasuddenT.J.feltlikeapartofthegroup,andbeforelonghewasbeingtreatedlikealeader.Hewassayingthingsthatmadealotofsense,andeveryonewaslistening.

Thenextday,T.J.wasveryactiveinalltheactivities.Bytheendoftheretreat,hehadjoinedtheHomelessProjectteam.Theotherstudentsontheteamwereimpressedwithhispassionateconcernandideas.TheyelectedT.J.co-chairmanoftheteam.ThestudentcouncilpresidentwouldbetakinghisinstructionfromT.J.Ware.Agroupofteachersstronglyopposedtohisbeingelectedco-chairman.Theveryprojectwastobeahugefooddrive,organizedbytheHomelessProjectteam.TheseteachersremindedCoggshall,theprincipal,“Hehasanarrestrecordaslongasyourarm.He’llprobablystealhalfthefood.”MrCoggshallremindedthemthatthepurposeoftheACEprogramwastouncoveranypositivepassionthatastudenthadandstrengthenitspracticeuntiltruechangecouldtakeplace.Theteachersleftthemeetingshakingtheirheads,firmlyconvincedthatfailurewasapproaching.

Twoweekslater,T.J.andhisfriendsledagroupof70studentsinadrivetocollectfoodandcollectedaschoolrecord:
