Actionsperformedviautterancesaregenerallycalledspeechactsandaregivenmorespecificlabels:
apology,complaint,compliment,invitation,promise,request,etc.
Thelabels/termsfordifferentkindsofspeechactsapplytothespeaker’scommunicativeintentioninproducinganutterance.
Speaker:
expectingtherecognitionofsuchcommunicativeintentionbythehearer
Speakerandhearer:
helpedbythecircumstancessurroundingtheutterance
Circumstances(includingotherutterances):
thespeechevent.
Inmanyways,thespeecheventdeterminestheinterpretationofanutteranceasperformingaparticularspeechact.

Utteredonawintrydaybyaspeakerreachingforacupoftea,itislikelytobeinterpretedasacomplaint.
Utteredonareallyhotsummer’sdaywiththespeakerbeinggivenaglassoficedtea,itislikelytobeinterpretedaspraise.
Thesameutterancecanbeinterpretedasdifferentkindsofspeechact.Thereisnooneutterancetooneactioncorrespondence.Thereismoretotheinterpretationofaspeechactthancanbefoundintheutterancealone.

Theactionperformedbyproducinganutteranceconsistsofthreerelatedacts:
Thelocutionaryactisthebasicact.Itisameaningfullinguisticexpression.

Meaninglessexpressionsarenotregardedaslocutionaryacts
Peopledon’tjustproducewell-formedutterances.Theyformanutterancewithapurposeorsomekindoffunctioninmind.Thisiscalledtheillocutionaryact.Theillocutionaryactisperformedviathecommunicativeforceofanutterance(generallyknownastheillocutionaryforceoftheutterance).

Thisutterancecanbeastatement,anoffer,anexplanation,orforsomeothercommunicativepurpose.
