Abstract

VanityFairwrittenbyWilliamMakepeaceThackerayisgenerallyrecognizedashismasterpiece,throughwhichheestablishedhisimportantpositioninthehistoryofEnglishliterature.Sincethepublicationofthisnovelinthe19thcentury,manycriticsandscholarsathomeandabroadhavebeenstudyingtheartistictechniquesandfeaturesofthisnovel.Buttheirstudiescannotbesaidtobeexhaustedorcompleteandthorough.

Onthebasisofrelevantresearchesbycriticsandscholarsathomeandabroad,thispaperdiscussesthefourmajorfiguresofspeechinthisclassic.Thepaperisdividedintofourmainparts,withanintroductionandaconclusion.ChapterTwoexaminestheeffectsofsatirethroughuseofnamesandhumoroussituations.ChapterThreediscussesironyinnarrationandcharacterization.ChapterFourexploreshowmetaphorisusedtobuildupcharacters.ChapterFiveillustrateshowthreepairsofcontrastsperfectthestructureofthenovelandclearlyshowtherelationshipsamongthecharacters.

Asoneofthemostfamousworksinthe19thCentury,VanityFairhelpsestablishWilliamMakepeaceThackeray’ssolidpositionasawell-knownnovelistofthe19thCenturyinEngland.Thebookwas,isandwillbepopularamongallthepeopleindifferenttimesbecauseofitsrealistsubjectandthewonderfulwritingskillsshowninit.Thestoryisbasedonthemiddle-and-upperclassesofEnglandinthe19thCenturywhenBritainwasquitepowerful.Atthattime,theindustriesandcommercewereallboomingandthesocietywasunderthecontrolofthenewcapitalists,whomadetheirfortunebyexploitingtheworkingclass.Atthesametime,thewarbetweenBritainandFrancebrokeout.Allpeopleinthemiddle-and-upperclasseswerebusywiththeirbusinessrelatingtofameandfortune,whichareassociatedwitheachother.
