Asaforeignstudent,Ihaveanumberofproblems,bothacademicallyandsocially.Thebiggestoneismeetingpeople.Ifeelconfidentaboutmyabilitytocopewithproblemsfrommystudies,butI’mnotcomfortablemakingfriendswithotherstudents,especiallylocalones.PerhapsI’mworryingunnecessarily,butIfinditdifficulttotalktothemandtomakefriends.Theprimaryreasonsarethelanguagebarrier.MyEnglishisquitestandardandformal,andalthoughthathelpsmewithmyacademicwork,Ihavetroubleunderstandingotherstudentswhentheyarejusttalking.ItseemstomethatinordertomeetwithotherstudentsIreallyneedinformal,colloquialEnglish.Besides,there’stheculturalgap.That’swhyit’ssodifficultforoverseasstudentsandnativeEnglishspeakingstudentstoreallygettoknoweachother.Ireallywanttoovercomethisdifficulty.Iguessthebestwaytobeginistostarttalkingaboutcourseworkthatweshare;andthenIcouldsuggestgoingforacupofteaorcoffee.Overcoffeewecouldgettoknoweachother.Anotherwaywouldbetojoinaclub,likeatenniscluboraphotoclub,becausethatimmediatelygivesyousomethingincommonwithotherpeoplethere.Itgivesyouastartingpointtobuildon.
