HereatBinham,thesaintsontheroodscreenwereexpunged,paintedoverwithversesfromanEnglishBible.

Today,they'rerestored,buttheworldoverwhichtheyoncepresidedisdeadandgone.

Wecan'tbringbackthelostworldofBinham'spaintedsaintswholeandaliveagain.

Butjustbecausethedeathofthatworldwassoshocking,soutterlyimprobable,andbecausetheReformationandthewarsofreligionittriggeredcutsodeepamarkonthebodyofourcountry,weneedtotryandreassemblethefragmentsofthatworldasbestwecan.

Onlythencanwehopetoansweroneofthemostpoignantquestionsinourhistory:

WhateverdidhappentoCatholicEngland?

Erasmus,theCatholicscholarsuperstaroftheage,camehereonamockpilgrimageandpouredscornontalesofsacredmilkandchapelsairmailedinfromtheHolyLand.
