Background

XuBeihong（1895-1953）wasanoutstandingChineseartistandeducatorofthefinearts.Xubecameanitinerantprofessionalpainterinhisearlyteensandanartteacherbeforereachingage20.Hewaswellknownforhishistoricalpaintings,portraits,andpicturesofhorses,cats,andotheranimals,andhewaspetentbothinWesternmediaandin

thetraditionalChineseink-and-washmethod.Hisworkscoverawiderangeofstylesandmediums,thoughheisbestknownforhishorsepaintings.

QiBaishi（1863-1957）wasoneofthetopartistsofthepresentage.Hewasofhumbleorigins,anditwaslargelythroughhisowneffortsthathebecameadeptatpoetry,calligraphy,andpainting.HewasactivetotheendofhislonglifeandservedasheadoftheBeijingInstituteofChinese.Hisstyleisstillmeaningfultoday.Heisknownforhispaintingsofflowersandbirds.

ChenYifei（1846-xx）wasoneofthemostsuccessfulcontemporary

Chineseartistsandaninternationallyrenownedoilpainter.HewasthemostcelebratedmodernpainterworkinginChina.HelivedinShanghai,andhispaintings（oftenover-lifesize）anddrawingsareoffiguresandlandscapesobservedinChina.Thefinedetailofhisworkhasearneditthedescription“romanticrealism”.Hewaswell-knownintheUSA,livingandworkinginNewYorkfrom1980-1990.HisEuropeanreputationgrewaftershowingsattheVeniceBiennaleandattheMarlboroughGalleryinLondonin1997.Chenwasalsoanestablishedfilm-maker.
