Background

XuBeihong(1895-1953)wasanoutstandingChineseartistandeducatorofthefinearts.Xubecameanitinerantprofessionalpainterinhisearlyteensandanartteacherbeforereachingage20.Hewaswellknownforhishistoricalpaintings,portraits,andpicturesofhorses,cats,andotheranimals,andhewaspetentbothinWesternmediaandin

thetraditionalChineseink-and-washmethod.Hisworkscoverawiderangeofstylesandmediums,thoughheisbestknownforhishorsepaintings.

QiBaishi(1863-1957)wasoneofthetopartistsofthepresentage.Hewasofhumbleorigins,anditwaslargelythroughhisowneffortsthathebecameadeptatpoetry,calligraphy,andpainting.HewasactivetotheendofhislonglifeandservedasheadoftheBeijingInstituteofChinese.Hisstyleisstillmeaningfultoday.Heisknownforhispaintingsofflowersandbirds.

ChenYifei(1846-xx)wasoneofthemostsuccessfulcontemporary

Chineseartistsandaninternationallyrenownedoilpainter.HewasthemostcelebratedmodernpainterworkinginChina.HelivedinShanghai,andhispaintings(oftenover-lifesize)anddrawingsareoffiguresandlandscapesobservedinChina.Thefinedetailofhisworkhasearneditthedescription“romanticrealism”.Hewaswell-knownintheUSA,livingandworkinginNewYorkfrom1980-1990.HisEuropeanreputationgrewaftershowingsattheVeniceBiennaleandattheMarlboroughGalleryinLondonin1997.Chenwasalsoanestablishedfilm-maker.
