OnereasonwhytheywereacceptedwasthattheforgeriesactuallylookeddifferentthanVermeer’sotherworks.ThedealerhadclaimedthattheforgerieswerefromanunknownperiodearlyinVermeer’sartcareer.Becausepainters’stylesoftenchange,throughouttheircareers,arthistoriansatthetimedidnotexpectthe“newdiscoveries”tolookexactlyliketheknownworksofVermeer.Infact,becausetheydidnotlooksimilartotheknownworks,expertsdidnotbothertolookatthemcarefully.Thisisbecauseexpertsexpectaforgertocopyfamouspaintingsascloselyaspossible.Oncetheartdealer’sfirstforgerieswereexpectedasreal,hewasfreetomakemore.Theotherscloselymatchedthefirstpaintingsinstyle,sotheywerealsoexpectedasrealVermeerpaintingsfromthesameearlyperiod.

AnotherreasonexpertswerefoolediswhatsomehistorianscallTheEmperor’sNewClotheseffect.InHansChristianAndersen’sstory,TheEmperor’sNewClothes,twocriminalsconvinceanemperorthatheiswearingbeautifulclothes,whenheisactuallynaked.Nooneintheempirewantstoadmitthattheycannotseetheclothesbecausetheybelievetheclothesaremagican4thatonlygoodpeoplecanseethem.Similarly,theartworldwasinfluencedbyafamousarthistorian,WilhelmvonBode,whosaidtheforgeriesweresomeofVermeer’sbestworks.BecausevonBodewashighlyrespected,otherexpertsbeganpraisingthe“newdiscoveries.”Atthetime,thismadeitdifficulttocriticizethepaintingsorsuggestthattheywerefakes.
