Ihavesurvivedacoupleofseriousboilingeggincidentsandlotsofcasesoffood–poisoning,probablyfromdirtykitchencounters.Althoughsomeofmyclotheshavefallenvictimtoironingexperimentation,IthinkIhavenowfinallyacquiredallthedomestic(居家的)skillsImissedoutinmymodemeducation.

In2006and2010,thecharmingeducationistSirKenRobinsongavetwoveryamusingtalksinwhichhediscussedtheimportanceofcreativityineducation.Robinson’smainviewpointisthatourcurrenteducationsystemdislocatespeoplefromtheirnaturaltalents.Iwouldliketogoastepfurtherandproposethatbesidesourtalents,thesystemtakesawaywhatusedtobepassedfromgenerationtogeneration–aworkingknowledgeofbasiclifeskills.

Today’sgraduatesmayhaveearnedthemselveshonorinhistory,laworeconomies,butwhenitcomestosimplethingslikeputtingupashelftoholdalltheiracademicbooks,orfixingaholeintheiron–trendclothes,theyhavetocallforhelpfromaprofessionalhandymanortailor.

Sincetheinventionoftheinternet,ithasneverbeeneasierforpeopletoaccessinformation,butourhighlyspecializededucationhasmadeusmoreone–sidedthanever.

Isuggestthatwestartwiththeimmediatereintroductionofsomeofthemostvitalaspectsof“domesticscience”education,beforethecurrentlackleadstoseriousaccidentsinstudenthalls.
