Abstract

OurEnglishStudyGroupBoss,thistermfocusontheinfluenceofKoreanWave.Asthetopiccoverssuchalargescale,everymemberchoosesthepartthatheismostinterestedin.MypartisKoreanPopMusic,whichisnotasimportantasKoreandramas,butisstillacriticalpartofKoreanWave.ThisessaywillstartwiththehistoryofKoreanPopMusic,whichhasahistoryofalmostacentury,fromTrotofTraditionPopMusictoModernPopMusicweseenow.ThenIwillhaveabriefintroductionofthespecialmodeofMusicProduction,whereEntertainmentfirmstrainees,andidolgroupsplayanimportantrole.Afterthis,Iwillmentiontheresearchwehavemadefollowedbyresultanalysis.Atlast,IwillmakeaconclusionwiththeradicalreasonofthepopularityofKoreanPopMusic.

ⅠIntroduction

TheKoreanWavereferstotheinfluenceofKoreancultureonothercountries.Recently,westronglyfeelthepopularityofKoreandramas,movies,music,food,Varietyshowsaroundus,right?

Sothat’sKoreanWave.InthisessayIwillhaveabriefdiscussionabouthowoneofapartofKoreanWave,KoreanPopMusicaffectChinaandwhy.

ⅡTheHistoryofKoreanPopMusic

Koreantraditionalpopmusicdatesbacktothe1920swhenitwasruledbyJapaneseinvaders.【1】StronglyinfluencedbyJapanesetraditionalmusicform,yonga（ヨンガ）,theoriginalformofKoreanpopmusic,Trot（트로트）,cameintoexistence.“Trot”isamusicformofsimpleandcheerfultunesalongwithsomedances.【2】

Thehistoryofmodernpopmusiccanbedividedinto4periods.Thefirst,inthe1920stothebeginningof1990s,theperiodofpreparation.Theeconomicdevelopmentinthe1980senhancedtheexternalcommunicationofKoreawiththeoutsideworldwhenKoreanpopmusicbegantoabsorbsomefeaturesofWesternmusic.Thesecond,in1992to1996,theperiodofaturn.Inthisperiod,KoreanvulgarmusicbegantomergewithWesternmusicmaterials.ThepresentativeofmusiciansinthisperiodisXuTaizhi,whomadeaninnovationofKoreanmusicform,trulycombingAfricanmusicwithvulgarmusicinKorea.Fromhim,KoreanmusiciansbegantodriveKoreanmusictoadirectionofhavingparticularcharacteristics.Thethird,thegrown-upperiod.AlongwiththereturnofalargenumberofKoreanAmericansandtheexpansionofinternationalmusiccommunications,KoreanmusiciansremouldedWesterndancemusicandabsorbedsomemusicalingredientsofBlueandJazz,takingKoreantraditionalmusicandlanguagestyleintoconsideration,andfinallygivebirthofthetypicalKoreanpopmusic,whichtookadvantageoftheformofidolgroupsandbegantowalkoutofKorea.Thefourth,from2000tonow,thedevelopmentperiod.After2000,thetraitofKoreanpopmusictendtostabilize,withamajorityofdance,popelectricalsoundsandHip-Hop.Meanwhile,manysingersandgroupswell-knowninwholeAsiahasappeared.【3】

ModernKoreanpopmusichasabsorbedthecharacteristicsofbothEasternandWesternmusic,combiningBallade,Rap,Dance,R&

B,Rock,Hiphop,IndieandJazzetc.thesesomanymusicforms.ModernKoreanPopmusicisbasedondancemusic,withanemphasisonrhythmandmelody.Therhythmisusuallyfast,andthemelodyiseasytoremember.【1】Koreanpopmusicseemstohaveamagicpower.Itcanimpresspeopleverymuchandmakethemhaveatrill.ThefascinatingcharmofKoreanmusicandtheexcitementbroughtbyitcanmakepeoplewholistentoitaddicted,especiallyamongyoungstersofabout15-30yearsold.

ⅢKoreanMusic-makingMode

SohowhasKoreanpopmusicmadeit?

Itmustbeowingmuchtothemusicproducingsystem.Generallyspeaking,thematureseriesofproceduresforKoreanartiststogrowupfromanaivekidtoasuperstarhasmaderemarkablecontributiontoitssuccess.

TherearemanyentertainmentfirmsinKoreaintendedespeciallyforproduceidols.Thesefirmsselectsomechildrenas“trainees”fromayoungage.Earlyevenasapupiloramiddleschoolstudentattheageof10yearsold,theartist-to-beisregisteredtotheentertainmentfirm.Generally,thetrainingperiodwillbe2-3years,someeven7years,beforefinallybecomingastar.However,thecompetitionisunbelievablystiff.Attheageof15,therewillbeatesttoselecttraineestobecomeartists.Inthistest,only1in800competitorswillstandout.Andwhat’sworse,onlyhalfoftheseartistscanfinallydebut.Thetrainingandselectionperiodcanbeverystrict.Thesubjectstheyneedtolearncovermusic,dialogue,shape,actandmake-up.Andtherearealwaysstrictexaminationsovertimeandonecanbeeasilyeliminatedifnotmeetingthestandards.【4】TheKoreandrama,Producer,reflectsthisphenomenontosomeextent.Thepopularsinger,Cindy,doesn’teatfoodwithstarchcozitcanmakeherfat.Shealsodoesn’thavesoupafraidofhavingherfaceswelledup.Whenseeingothertraineesinthisfirmjustlikeherasachild,shetoldthemtoquitandnottosufferit.Theyreallysufferalot.HanGeng,anex-memberofSuperJunior-MmaintainedwheninterviewedinLuYuhasanappointment,whenbeingatrainee,atmosteverydayhehadtocontinuouslypracticeforaslongas20hours.“Thefiercetrainingwasextremelybitter,evenwithoutknowinghisbonewasbrokenafter2months.Traineesbotheatandliveinthefirm.Goingoutpersonallyiscontrolledtotally,withlittlefreedom.”What’smore,almosteveryartistshavetohavecosmeticsurgeries,whichisnotonlyexpensivebutalso,worse,reallysuffering.Whatismostamazingisthataccordingtodatapublishedin2013,thereareoverall25,000entertainersinKorea,whichhasatotalpopulationof50,000,000,whichmeans1among200ofKoreanisanartistwhohasalreadydebuted.SeewhatanimportantindustrymusicentertainmentisinKorea!

ⅣResearchandAnalysis

AsIamreallyafanofKoreanpopmusic,myfeelingthatKoreanmusicispopularmaybetoosubjective.SoourgroupdidasurveytoseeifKoreanmusicisreallythatpopularinChina,especiallyamonguniversitystudents.Iamalsocuriousaboutwhataretheythinkof,KoreanpopmusicandthemusicindustryinKorea.

Luckily,ourquestionnairewaswellreceivedand80pieceswasreturnedback.Thenumberofsampleswasbigenoughsotheresultisratherpersuadable.

Ihaveenclosedapieceofthequestionnaireandtheresultsattheendoftheessayforconsulting.

Thereare21questionsinthequestionnaireaboutKoreanmusicwhichcanbeseparatedinto3parts.Thefirstpartisrelatedtopeople’senthusiasmtoKoreanpopmusic.Thesequestionsincludequestion1,2,3,6,7,8,9,14,15,19,20,21.

Accordingtotheresults,wecansee15%oftheintervieweessaytheydon’thavecontactwithKoreanmusic,whiletherestofthemhavelistened,moreorless.SeemsthatKoreanmusichavereallyenteredmostpeople’slife.Amongthepeoplewhoclaimtheyhavelistentothemusic,13.75%listenoften,7.5%likeit,and18.75%claimtheylikeitverymuch.IntermsofwatchingMVsandthenumberofsongstheyhavelistened,andiftheytendtosingorhumthelyricsorrhythmsofthesongs,theresultsaresimilar.TheslightdifferenceisthattheMVisnotaspopularasmusicitself.Andwhatisawesomeisthat27.5%oftheintervieweeshavelistenedtoover100Koreansongs,whichtakesoveronefifth,amazing,right?

TurntothequestionsintendedtoseeaboutthefansinChina.HalfoftheintervieweesclaimtobeafanofaKoreanartistorgroup.Andmostofthemcanliketheidolssanelywhileapproximately1/4isverymuchcrazyaboutthem.

Turningtotheresultsofquestionsaboutbuyingalbumsandgoingtotheconcerts,wecanseemostpeoplehardlybuyalbumstosupporttheiridolsbut1/4ofthemsaidtheywillcertainlygototheconcertoftheirfavouriteidolswhiletherestwillconsiderthespecificsituation.

Beforemovingtothe“favouriteidols”part,let’stakealookonsomemostpopularartistsandgroupsinKorea.AccordingtostaticsofthenumberofmembersofauthorityfansorganisationsofKoreanfemaleidolgroupsuptoFebruary5th,2016【5】andtheWorldAlbumofBillboardonMarch2nd,2016【6】,thesetwopicturesarethemostpopularfemaleandmaleartistsorgroups.The5mostfavouritefemaleartistsorgroupsaregirl’sgeneration,iu,apink,girl’sday,andwondergirls.The5mostreceivedmaleartistsorgroupsareTVXQ,BTS,Beast,Bigbang,andInfinite.Thequestion19and20questtheintervieweestomakealistonhis/herfavouriteartistsorsingersaccordingtotheextentstheylikethem.Wehavereceived27valuableanswers,indicatingthat33.75%oftheintervieweesarereallyintoKoreanidols.Amongtheartists,IUisthemostpopular,whohas7fans.ThenextwhoisalsoverypopularisG-Dragon,whohas5fans.Amongthegroups,Bigbangisthemostpopularwith12fans,SuperJuniorandGirl’sGenerationarethesecondwith5,InfiniteandEXOarethethirdwith4supporters,andLovelyz,GfriendandBTSarethefourthwith2lovers.

Ourlastquestionisaskingintervieweestoexpresstheirlovetotheiridols.14ofthemrespondedtothequestion,indicatingthatatleast17.5%ofpeoplearerealfansoftheirfavouriteartistsandKor
