Thereisevidence,though,thattheancestorsofthemmighthavetraveledmillionsofmeterstogettoAustraliafromAfrica.Thatisn’tasunlikelyasitmightatfirstseem.Australiausedtobeconnectedtoothercontinents,longago,aspartofasupercontinentcalledGondwana.Andhumanshavebeenknowntotransportspeciesallovertheplanet.Butthere’sathirdoption.Thespidersmighthaverafted(乘筏)longdistancesacrossthesea.

Tofigureoutwhichstorywasmostlikelytrue,Harrisonandhercolleagueslookedatthespider’sgenes.TheylookedatthegenesinsevenMoggridgearainbowispidersfromKangaroo,andfivespeciesofMoggridgeaspidersfromSouthAfrica.TheAustralianandAfricanspiderssplitofffromacommonancestorsome2millionto16millionyearsago,thegenesshowed.
