Rollingconditionsinhotstripmillsandtheirinfluenceontheperformanceofworkrolls

Summary.Themechanicalrollingconditionsinhotstripmillsarepreciselydefinedbyvariables,whicharetakendirectlyfromtherollingscheduleseperationforce,torque,speed,stripthickness)orcalculatedfromfiguresoftherollingscheduleanddimensionsofthemill(stripreduction,rolldiameteretc).Thesevariablesallowtodescriblethemechanicalrollingconditionsofallpassesinroughingandfinishingmills.Thesevariablesshouldbesupplementedbythemetallurgicalrollingconditions.Theythengivebasicinformationontheconditionswhichdeterminewear(specificload,wearspeed)andfirecrazing(co-efficientofheatpenetrationetc).

Thereisagoodchancetousetheexperiencesofothermillswithvariousrollgradesbyanalogcomparison-aslongastherollingconditionsaresimilar.Thismethodislimitedby“abnormalrollingconditions”,whichrequiretotallydifferentrollgrades,althoughifitwouldbemuchbettertoeliminatetheabnormalconditions.

Introduction.inhotstripmills,slabsof150to250mmthickarerolledtostrip1.5to12mmthick.Conventionalhotstripmillsconsistofroughingandfinishingstands.Theconfigurationoftheroughingmillsvarieswidely.Amillwithonereversingstandandoneortwocontinuousroughingstandsiscalleda%conditionsmillandamillwith4to6conditionsroughingstandsiscalledacontinuousmill.

In3/4continuousandcontinuousmills,thefirststandsareusuallytwohighstandswhiletheremainderare4highstands.Inadditiontothesehorizontalstands,severaledgersarealsoused.Thefinishingmillshaveaminimumof4standsbutnormallyhave6to7stands.

Rollingconditionsvaryfrommilltomill,standtostandandpasstopass.Millconfigurationsaredesignedforadesiredtotalstip(thickness)reduction,however,eachstandislimitedinstripreductionbythemaximumseparationforce,maximumtorque,riskofslippageetc.

Inordertosupplythecorrectrollforeachmill,rollmakersaskfordetailsoftherollingconditionsandanyspecialcircumstances.However,howtousethisinformation?

Therehavemanydiscussionsovertheyearsbutrarelyanyreallygoodresultswiththesecomparisons.

Forexample,lookingatroughingmillworkrolls,therearesomanyrollgradesbeingusedindifferentmillsthatitisevidentthattheoptimumgradetoyieldthemaximumqualityforallapplicationshasnotyetbeenfound.

Todate,notheorieshavebeenproved.Infact,inmanyinstancesthecombinationofexperienceandrollperformanceinthemillsistotallycontrarytothetheoriesofyesterdayandtoday.

→“Banding”inroughingstandsnevercreatedproblems,butthehandingprobleminfinishingmillshasnotbeensolvedbyanyrollgrade.Andthereislittlehopeforchangeinfuture.

→Thereisnotsingleoutstandingqualityforroughingmillswhichout-performsallotherqualitiesineveryapplication.Thisisbecauserollingconditionsvarywidely.

Inthispaperanattemptismadetoidentifysomevariableswhichareindependentonthemillandthepassesintheymill,andthentoanalysetile“rollingconditions”.Thebasesfortheseanalyticalstudiesareactualrollingschedulesforsimilarstripdimensionsandqualitiesfromdifferentmillsandexperiencewithdifferentrollgradesinthesemills.Wehavetoidentifythedifferentvariablesforeverystandandeverypassandthentrytofindtherelationshipbetweenthesevariablesandtheperformancefigurefordifferentrollgrades.Allinformationaboutspecialpracticesinthemillsforproducinggoodstripprofileandflatstrip,whichareofhighimportanceformillpeople,arenotconsideredbecausetheyprobablyhavenoinfluenceonthechoiceofthecorrectrollgrade.Theinitialideawastoanswerallquestions,tosolveallproblemsbyhavingrulesforrollwearandfirecrazing.Weveryquicklyfoundthatthiswasimpossible.Evenwiththemostsophisticatedmethods,becausewecanonlystudy“normalrollingconditions”andeveryoftenthesocalled“abnormalconditions”areeverydayoccurrences.Andonlythesimplefiguresfromtherollingschedulesareavailableandnoactualinformationonloads.torqueortherealtemperaturedistributiononstripandrolls,nothingaboutchangeofthetotalrollingprogram(length,coffinshape….)
