Thissideofparadise,hisfirstnovel,waspublishedin1920.Encouraged(鼓励)byitssuccess,Fitzgeraldbegantodevotemoretimetohiswriting.ThenhecontinuedwiththenoveltheBeautifulandDamned(1922),acollectionofshortstoriesThalesoftheJazzAge(1922),andaplayTheVegetable(1923).ButhisgreatestsuccesswasthenovelTheGreatGatsby,publishedin1925,whichquickbroughthimpraise(赞美)fromtheliteraryworld(文学界).Yetitfailedtogivehimtheneededfinancialsecurity(财政担保).Then,in1926,hepublishedanothercollectionofshortstoriesAlltheSadYoungMen.

However,Fitzgerald’sproblemswithhiswifeZeldahadaneffect(影响)onhiswriting.Duringthe1920shetriedtoreorderhislife,butfailed.By1930,hiswifehadherfirstbreakdownandwenttoaSwissclinic.DuringthisperiodhecompletednovelsTenderIstheNightin1934andTheloveofthelastTycoonin1940.WhilehiswifewasinhospitalintheUnitedStates,hegottotallyaddictedto(沉迷于)alcohol(酒精).SheilaGraham,hisdearfriend,helpedhimfighthisalcoholism.
